The renewed demand came about eight weeks and two days after Kimmel returned to ABC following an earlier suspension—not exactly nine weeks.
What prompted Trump’s November 2025 post?
Kimmel’s November 19 monologue joked about the expected release of Epstein-related files. The timing followed congressional movement on legislation directing the Justice Department to release records. The next day, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Why does ABC Fake News keep Jimmy Kimmel, a man with No Talent and Very Poor Television Ratings, on the air? Why do the TV Syndicates put up with it? Also, totally biased coverage. Get the bum off the air!!!” (The Wrap)
That was a new call for Kimmel’s removal, separate from the September controversy over his comments about the political reaction to Charlie Kirk’s killing.
Why was Kimmel taken off ABC earlier?
On September 15, Kimmel criticized efforts by what he called the “MAGA gang” to characterize the suspect in Kirk’s killing as something other than one of their own and to score political points from the killing. On September 17, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be preempted indefinitely. FCC chair Brendan Carr had publicly urged action against Kimmel that day.

Disney said it suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation and that it viewed some of Kimmel’s comments as ill-timed and insensitive. ABC announced on September 22 that the program would return; Kimmel was back on the schedule the following night, September 23. (ABC News; Free Speech Center at Middle Tennessee State University)
How close was the “nine weeks” interval?
From Kimmel’s September 23 return to Trump’s November 20 post was eight weeks and two days. “Nine weeks” is a rounded description, not an exact interval. The September suspension and November post also had different immediate triggers: the earlier dispute concerned Kimmel’s remarks about the response to Kirk’s killing; the later one followed his Epstein-files jokes.

Trump had criticized Kimmel’s return before
On September 24, the day after Kimmel returned, Trump said: “I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million.” (Axios) Those remarks were separate from his November 20 post calling for ABC to remove Kimmel.

In April 2026, after Kimmel joked about Melania Trump, Trump called for Kimmel to be fired. FCC chair Brendan Carr then ordered an early review of licenses held by eight ABC-owned stations. ABC and Disney challenged that review in court.

As of the Associated Press report published October 6, 2026, a judge had not ruled on ABC’s request for an injunction. ABC attorney Beth Wilkinson argued the review was already affecting editorial choices, saying, “Our editorial decisions are being affected right now.” That proceeding came months after the November 2025 Epstein-files incident; it should not be treated as its cause or as a resolution of the earlier dispute.
