The enthusiastic first reactions are a snapshot of selected critics—not a sign of unanimous approval. The six-episode fourth season premiered on HBO on January 14, 2024.
What is Night Country about?
Set in the fictional Alaskan town of Ennis during polar night, the season follows police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and state trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis). They investigate the disappearance of eight scientists from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, a case that intersects with the unsolved murder of local activist Annie Kowtok.

Issa López created and directed the season, which shifts the anthology toward a female-led story rooted in its community. Its setting and characters make it a distinct chapter in True Detective, rather than a straightforward return to the first season’s approach.
What did critics praise in the first reviews?
Atmosphere was a consistent point of enthusiasm. The remote, wintry setting gives the investigation a strong sense of place and allows the season to lean into horror as well as crime drama. Dave Nemetz of TVLine praised the landscape’s effect, writing, “The move to Alaska pays off in a big way here: Season 4 has an exceptionally strong sense of place, with a bleak and frigid landscape that gives you the chills just watching it.”

Reviewers also highlighted Foster and Reis’s performances and the season’s female-forward perspective. In Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup, Inverse critic Hoai-Tran Bui called it “The most thrilling and invigorating season of the show since its first.” Rolling Stone critic Alan Sepinwall praised the six-episode format and its balance of familiar strengths with a different direction.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the season as “Frighteningly atmospheric” and highlights its leads, calling it “a fresh and frosty variation on True Detective’s existential themes.” That is the aggregator’s editorial summary, not an individual review or a claim that every critic agreed.
What were critics divided about?
The main reservation concerned the mystery: whether its increasingly complicated elements cohere, and whether the story’s pacing and resolution pay them off. Some critics found the plotting less convincing than the atmosphere and performances. Metacritic’s page includes a particularly sharp assessment from New York Times television critic Mike Hale, who wrote that “The mystery steadily dissolves into preposterousness, the characters sink into incoherence, and the horror isn’t original or evocative enough to carry things on its own.”
Nemetz’s TVLine review likewise paired praise for the setting and horror elements with criticism of what he saw as a convoluted mystery and familiar influences. The disagreement is useful context: a viewer drawn mainly to mood and performances may respond differently from one who wants a tightly resolved case.
How does it compare with season one?
The early reviews did not treat season one as a simple template. Some saw Night Country as a return to the show’s high level of quality; others emphasized how its female-led story changes the anthology’s perspective. The Hollywood Reporter critic Dan Fienberg described the shift away from the series’ trademark masculine brooding as refreshing and potent, while Steve Erickson of Gay City News praised the season for taking the series in a different direction.

For a comparison, consider four separate questions rather than asking whether season four simply repeats season one:
- Atmosphere: Does the polar-night setting create the same grip for you as season one’s landscape and mood?
- Characters: Do Foster and Reis’s performances and the relationship between Danvers and Navarro carry the story?
- Mystery: Does the investigation remain coherent and satisfying as it develops?
- Series identity: Does the change in perspective feel like a meaningful evolution, even where the season echoes familiar themes?
What do the review scores say?
Aggregator figures are changeable snapshots, not a poll of every critic or viewer. As displayed on September 30, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 93% Tomatometer from 210 reviews and a 55% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 ratings. The Tomatometer aggregates critic reviews; the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Neither percentage means that the corresponding share of all critics or viewers liked the season.
Metacritic displayed an 81 Metascore based on 48 critic reviews, with 40 positive, eight mixed, and zero negative. That breakdown sits alongside the sharply critical review excerpted above, illustrating why an overall favorable aggregate does not erase meaningful disagreement.
Where can you watch Night Country?
Rotten Tomatoes’ season page listed HBO Max subscription viewing and purchase through Fandango when accessed on September 30, 2026. Streaming and purchase options vary by territory and can change, so check the service listings available in your country before subscribing or buying.
