The films follow the boundary between the digital Grid and the real world, with Kevin Flynn linking the first two stories and Ares turning the central crossing in the other direction. Disney also identifies the animated series TRON: Uprising as part of the franchise.
What order should you watch the TRON movies in?
For a first viewing, use theatrical release order. It follows the franchise’s introduction of the Grid, its return to that world through Flynn’s son, and then its story of a Program entering the real world.
- TRON (1982): Kevin Flynn, a video-game maker, is pulled into a digital world after hacking his former employer’s mainframe.
- TRON: Legacy (2010): Flynn’s son Sam follows a signal from his father’s arcade into the Grid and discovers Kevin has been trapped there.
- TRON: Ares (2025): A highly sophisticated Program crosses from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.
Disney dates the original film to July 9, 1982, and Legacy to December 17, 2010. Disney’s UK page lists October 10, 2025, for Ares; that date is the UK listing, not a universal release date.
Where does TRON: Uprising fit?
TRON: Uprising is an animated series Disney identifies as part of the franchise. The official material cited here does not establish a complete episode-by-episode placement relative to all three films, so it is best treated as an additional screen work rather than inserted into a definitive viewing sequence.

What is the Grid?
The Grid is the digital world at the center of the films. Its inhabitants include Programs, which are connected to human users or creators; the stories play with what happens when the boundary between that world and ours is crossed. That description captures the recurring premise, rather than stating an official rulebook for every film.
In the 1982 film, Flynn encounters the Program TRON and Yori while opposing the Master Control Program. In Legacy, Sam enters the Grid in search of his father and becomes entangled in the conflict involving the Program CLU and Quorra. Disney’s summaries trace a shift in direction: Flynn is drawn into the Grid, Sam goes looking for him there, and Ares sends a Program outward.

How are the three films connected?
Kevin Flynn is the central link between the first two films. He is the human protagonist pulled into the digital world in TRON, then the missing father Sam seeks in TRON: Legacy. Ares introduces a new crossing between worlds: its title character is a Program sent into the real world, while Disney’s production information describes technologist Eve Kim seeking critical code written by Kevin Flynn.
One useful way to read the series is as a changing relationship between creators, Programs, and the worlds they inhabit. That is an interpretation of the films’ recurring setup, not a claim that Disney defines it as official franchise terminology.

What distinguishes TRON: Ares?
TRON: Ares puts a Program in the real world rather than focusing on a human entering the Grid. Disney identifies Nine Inch Nails as the composer of the film’s original motion-picture soundtrack. Director Joachim Rønning described the appeal of the premise in terms of Ares discovering what it means to be human; that is his account of the creative idea, not a plot synopsis.
Disney lists the film at 1 hour 59 minutes on its UK page and provides DVD, Blu-ray, and digital-download information. Disney Japan’s product page displays a 4K UHD plus Blu-ray set. Those format listings do not establish current stock at a particular retailer or guarantee that an edition is available in every region.
