Tribute: The Quiet and Fierce Courage of Women in Shyam Benegal’s Cinema

Shyam Benegal’s women are not defined by one kind of courage. His films attend to the roles, stigma and economic structures shaping their choices.

Shyam Benegal’s films make women’s lives inseparable from the social and economic forces around them. Their courage is not one shared quality or a single kind of triumph: it emerges in different ways as women confront prescribed roles, stigma and unequal power. Benegal himself identified women’s rights as a concern running through films including Ankur, Bhumika, Nishant, Manthan and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda.

What makes the women in Benegal’s cinema courageous?

The courage in these films is often less a matter of grand gestures than of seeing women as people whose choices and perspectives count. In a December 2024 account for The Indian Express, critic Nandini Ramnath argues that films such as Ankur, Bhumika and Mandi direct attention to the patriarchal circumstances shaping women’s actions, rather than making the women themselves the problem to be judged. That shift matters: it asks viewers to look at the conditions that limit choice, not only at the choices women make within them.

Benegal put the concern plainly in a 1999 interview with Rediff: “Women’s rights have played an important part of my films from the beginning, from the time I started making feature films like Ankur, Bhumika, Nishant, even Manthan and more recently Suraj Ka Saatwa Ghoda.” The films do not therefore offer one template for female strength. They attend to different lives and structures, and they do not all tell those lives from the same narrative position.

Bhumika: the self beyond prescribed roles

Bhumika offers a particularly direct way to consider the friction between a woman’s selfhood and the roles others expect her to occupy. The UCLA Tuli Research Centre describes the film as exploring the roles society confines women to and the ambivalence that meets a woman asserting independence. A scholarly Cambridge University Press chapter reads its protagonist as an actress negotiating selfhood amid imposed public and private roles.

That tension makes independence more complicated than simply escaping one role for another. The question is how much room a woman has to define herself when public expectations and private obligations both press upon her. The film’s force, in this reading, lies in taking that struggle seriously rather than reducing it to a judgment about whether its central woman is dutiful or defiant.

Mandi: a community shaped by stigma and economics

Where Bhumika foregrounds an individual’s negotiation of selfhood, Mandi turns toward a community of women and the structures around sex work. The Cambridge chapter examines how economic arrangements and patriarchal power shape that world. Ramnath’s account in The Indian Express emphasizes that the film does not make the women’s morality its central question.

This distinction changes the terms on which the women can be seen. Instead of treating social stigma as proof of personal failure, a structural reading asks who holds power, how livelihoods are constrained and how the community navigates those conditions. The film’s attention to a group also widens the frame beyond a single woman’s struggle.

Different stories, different perspectives

Benegal’s recurring concern with women’s rights does not mean that the films share identical conflicts or storytelling methods. In his Rediff interview, he included Ankur, Nishant and Manthan among the films in which that concern is present. The available accounts support treating them as part of a continuing interest in women’s rights and patriarchal circumstances, without collapsing their individual stories into one another.

Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda adds a formal reminder that women’s lives may be approached through competing accounts. The UCLA Tuli Research Centre notes that the film tells stories from multiple standpoints. A life viewed from more than one angle is not a single, settled verdict; the form leaves room for perspective to shape what is understood.

Together, these films suggest a cinema attentive to the relationship between personal agency and the structures that constrain it. Their women are not defined by one outcome, one virtue or one kind of resistance. The quietness or fierceness of their courage depends on the particular world each film asks us to see.
