Rajshri Deshpande and Abhay Deol give the series its emotional center: their performances make the private cost of loss as vivid as the public struggle that follows.
What is Trial by Fire about?
Released on Netflix in 2023, Trial by Fire dramatizes the aftermath of the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire through the experience of Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, whose lives are shaped by loss and a prolonged search for answers. Netflix reported that the fire killed 59 people and injured 100; that is the figure in the platform’s release announcement, rather than an independently verified count here.

The series is based on the Krishnamoorthys’ book, Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy. It is a dramatization of true events, so scenes and dialogue should be understood as part of the series’ storytelling, not automatically as a documentary record. The seven episodes move among the parents’ grief, their efforts to investigate and organize, legal proceedings, other people affected by the tragedy, and the fire itself. Netflix credits Prashant Nair as showrunner, with Nair and Randeep Jha directing and Nair and Kevin Luperchio writing.
For readers who want to explore the account behind the adaptation, the Krishnamoorthys’ book, Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy, is the natural further reading.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIAL BY FIRE is the true-life Texas story of the unlikely bond between an imprisoned death row inmate (Jack O'Connell) and a mother of two from Houston (Laura Dern) who, though facing staggering odds, fights mightily for his freedom.
Why the performances make the series work
Rajshri Deshpande as Neelam
Deshpande’s portrayal carries the force of a parent trying to live with an irreparable loss while refusing to let unanswered questions disappear. Lakshana N Palat, reviewing the series for The Indian Express, singled out the visceral quality of her performance and its depiction of grief intertwined with the search for answers. The role’s impact comes not just from anguish, but from the way persistence and pain coexist.
Abhay Deol as Shekhar
Deol makes Shekhar a compelling counterpart rather than simply a second voice in the family’s campaign. Together, the leads give the story a sense of two people enduring the same catastrophe in their own ways. Palat also praised the performances as visceral, while Deepa Gahlot of Scroll highlighted the lead acting and the small domestic moments that make the grief feel affecting.
Rank #2
The supporting cast includes Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah, Shilpa Shukla and Shardul Bharadwaj. The wider focus matters: the story’s consequences reach beyond one household, and the series makes room for other families and people touched by the fire.
How the series handles grief and accountability
Trial by Fire is most affecting when it brings public struggle back to the scale of everyday life. Gahlot describes it as an earnest, non-sensational portrayal of an avoidable tragedy, praising the way small domestic moments make grief tangible. That restraint helps the series resist turning suffering into spectacle.
Rank #3
At the same time, the Krishnamoorthys’ personal loss unfolds alongside a fight for accountability. Palat reads the series as balancing that legal struggle with the private, continuing work of grief. The two threads give the drama its shape: seeking answers is not a substitute for mourning, and mourning does not make the demand for answers go away.
The series is emotionally heavy by design. Its focus is mass loss, bereavement and a long fight for justice, not light entertainment. Its strongest effect comes from asking viewers to stay with the human consequences rather than offering the release of a tidy resolution.

Is Trial by Fire worth watching?
Yes, for viewers prepared for a serious and affecting drama. Deshpande and Deol’s restrained, deeply felt work gives the story its power, while the series’ attention to ordinary family life keeps the pursuit of accountability from becoming an abstract legal plot. It is a worthwhile watch if you want a character-led account of grief and persistence; its subject matter makes it a difficult choice for anyone seeking something light.
