Spoiler warning: This article discusses the end of The Last of Us season two, episode two. Read on only if you have watched it or do not mind learning how it ends.
Yes, Joel dies in season two, episode two. Abby, whose father was killed by Joel, recognizes him after he saves her during a large infected attack near Jackson. Her group attacks him at a cabin, Ellie arrives to find him gravely injured, and Abby kills him. The death is the most shocking moment of the season because it removes the show’s central character and starts a new chapter for Ellie, Abby, and the community around them.
What happens in the episode
The episode runs two threads at once. The first is a large infected attack near Jackson, which the show expands well beyond a single scene. The second follows Abby, who is in the middle of that attack when Joel steps in and saves her. Instead of going their separate ways afterward, Joel accompanies her to a cabin where her companions are waiting.
That is where the situation turns. Abby recognizes Joel as the man who killed her father, a doctor at the hospital. She and her companions attack him. Ellie arrives and finds Joel badly wounded. Abby kills him at the end of the episode, and the episode closes on the consequences of that choice rather than on any resolution.

How the show adapts the game’s moment
Joel’s death is adapted from The Last of Us Part II, the video game on which season two is based. Germain Lussier’s Gizmodo report of April 21, 2025, identifies two points of fidelity and one clear departure, and each one shapes how the scene reads.
It happens at the same point in the story
The show places Joel’s death at the same stage of the narrative as the game. Viewers who know the game’s structure will recognize the moment in the same place, so the episode works as a faithful translation rather than a reshuffled plot.

It is depicted in the same manner
According to the same Gizmodo report, the show also depicts the death in the same way as the game. The key beats, Abby’s recognition, the attack on Joel, and Ellie’s arrival, follow the game’s sequence closely enough that the episode can be judged on how well it stages that familiar turn.
The surrounding action is expanded
The departure is the Jackson attack. The episode uses it to build a large set piece around the moment, so the death arrives after a sustained sequence of danger rather than as a quieter reveal. The attack does more than add spectacle: it puts Joel and Abby in the same place under pressure, which is what makes their encounter feel inevitable when it comes.

Why the title says the story has changed
The headline’s phrase “will never be the same” is an editorial judgment about consequences, not a plot summary. The supported explanation is simple. Joel is the character the season has been built around, and his death removes him from the story. Ellie’s pursuit of Abby and the wider fallout in Jackson follow directly from that loss.
The headline does not tell you what later episodes will do, and nothing in the reporting on this episode claims to. Read the phrase as a reading of the episode’s consequences, not as a forecast.

Watching it and where the story comes from
Season two premiered on April 13, 2025, according to a Warner Bros. Discovery press release, which describes the series as an HBO adaptation of the PlayStation game franchise. That is a premiere date, not a statement about where the season streams today. Availability depends on your country, and you should confirm which service carries season two in your region before you start watching.
Quick Recap
- Playing the game is optional. The episode stands on its own, but The Last of Us Part II is the source of the event and is the clearest way to compare the adaptation. Check the current edition and regional availability before buying.
- The companion podcast covers the season. HBO’s listing for its official season-two companion podcast names Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann as showrunners who discuss the season’s events. The listing describes the podcast; it does not contain their comments on this episode, so check the episodes directly if you want their words on Joel’s death.
