If you are looking for A Treasure Trove of Short Stories, note that it is not the anthology named in CISCE’s prescribed-books list for the 2026 ICSE examination year. The current prescribed book is Treasure Chest: A Collection of ICSE Short Stories & Poems, published by Evergreen Publications (India) Ltd. Check the stories against your class and examination year before buying or studying; the two titles are not interchangeable.
Is Treasure Trove of Short Stories still prescribed for ICSE?
Not in the CISCE prescribed-books appendix for ICSE Examination Year 2026. That appendix names Treasure Chest: A Collection of ICSE Short Stories & Poems from Evergreen Publications (India) Ltd. The prescribed works can change by examination year, so use the official list for the year you will sit rather than relying on an older school list, book, or answer collection. See CISCE’s Appendix I for ICSE Examination Year 2026.
What is the 2026 short-story list?
The prescribed short stories differ between Class IX and Class X. The 2026 list is:
Class IX
- Bonku Babu’s Friend — Satyajit Ray
- Oliver Asks for More — Charles Dickens
- The Model Millionaire — Oscar Wilde
- The Home-coming — Rabindranath Tagore
- The Boy who Broke the Bank — Ruskin Bond
Class X
- With the Photographer — Stephen Leacock
- The Elevator — William Sleator
- The Girl Who Can — Ama Ata Aidoo
- The Pedestrian — Ray Bradbury
- The Last Lesson — Alphonse Daudet
These are the stories listed in the 2026 prescribed-text materials; check the syllabus for your own examination year if it differs. CISCE also publishes the syllabus and assessment details in its ICSE English (01) syllabus for Examination Year 2026.
How is the Literature in English paper assessed?
For the 2026 examination year, Paper 2, Literature in English, is two hours and carries 80 marks. CISCE says questions are based on prescribed drama, prose, and poetry. Short-story questions focus on the text, and candidates are expected to show understanding and respond in their own words. That makes reading the assigned stories and being able to explain what happens and why more useful than relying only on memorized answers.

A Treasure Trove of Short Stories is a legacy title found in historical school materials. The Doon School’s curriculum page describes a collection of 15 stories and attributes it to Frank Bros. & Co.; a 2012–13 Class IX book list identifies S. Chakravarthi as compiler and Frank Bros. and Company (Publishers) Ltd. as publisher. Those references establish historical use, not current ICSE prescription.

What should you check before buying or studying?
- Confirm the examination year and class against the official CISCE prescribed-books appendix.
- Check the book’s contents against the relevant Class IX or Class X story list above; the title alone is not enough to confirm syllabus alignment.
- Verify the edition, ISBN, availability, and price with the publisher or bookseller. The CISCE materials identify the title and publisher but do not specify a retail edition, ISBN, stock, or price.
