Spoilers for the six-part second series of Trigger Point. The season’s finale is its most satisfying installment because it makes Lana Washington’s bomb-disposal expertise a matter of personal survival, pays off the previous episode’s capture cliffhanger, and brings The Wave’s immediate campaign to a decisive end. That is a case for the finale as the season’s best part, not an objective ranking or a claim of critical consensus.
How does the Trigger Point season 2 finale end?
Episode six begins with Lana (Vicky McClure) captured by Hope and The Wave. Hope coerces her into helping stage an attack on the Home Secretary at Counter Terrorism Headquarters, while a bomb at Lana’s parents’ home puts them in danger. Lana has to appear to cooperate while protecting her family, her colleagues and the people at the headquarters.
She secretly subverts the attack’s phone-triggered detonation. As she appears to build and place a bomb at the headquarters, she alerts colleagues to get her parents to safety and redirects the signal. The explosion hits the bomb in Hope’s van instead. Hope and the Wave members inside die; Counter Terrorism Headquarters is spared.
The climax is effective because Lana’s victory depends on deception and technical skill rather than a straightforward physical escape. She must keep Hope convinced, manage the danger to her family and prevent an attack on the Home Secretary at the same time. The story’s fictional bomb mechanics are best understood as plot, not as real-world guidance.

Who are The Wave, and what happens to them?
The Wave is the group behind the season’s bombing campaign. Hope’s coercion of Lana turns that campaign into a direct threat to Lana’s family and to the Home Secretary. The finale ends The Wave’s immediate attack: Hope and the members in the van die when Lana diverts the detonation.
That is a conclusive resolution to this particular threat, rather than proof that the series itself is over. ITV announced a third series in October 2024.
Which important characters die in season 2?
The season’s losses build before the finale, so it is worth distinguishing them from the deaths in Hope’s van.

- Hope and the Wave members in the van die in episode six, after Lana redirects the blast.

Why the finale can be the season’s best part
The finale concentrates the series’ familiar strengths into a single conflict. Its ticking-clock danger gives the episode momentum; the previous episode’s capture cliffhanger supplies an immediate payoff; and the threat to Lana’s parents makes the stakes personal without taking the story away from her bomb-disposal work. Lana is not simply reacting to the crisis: her concealed maneuver is what changes its outcome.
The result also has a clear shape. The headquarters survives, the people in the van do not, and The Wave’s immediate campaign is stopped. Earlier deaths make the resolution feel costly rather than untouched by the season’s violence, while the ending still leaves room for the show to continue.

What might make viewers disagree?
The same elaborate reversals that create suspense may strain plausibility. In his season-level review, Nick Hilton of The Independent praised Vicky McClure’s screen presence and the show’s ability to build tension around timers and threatened civilians, while questioning the serial-bomber premise’s plausibility and noting Lana’s plot armor. Those are observations about series two as a whole, not a verdict that this finale is the best episode.
Viewers who want grounded procedural realism or more character development than explosive set pieces may find the finale’s mechanics too convenient. The case for calling it the season’s best part rests instead on how well it combines suspense, Lana’s agency, personal stakes and a decisive payoff.
