Travis Kelce said he was “heartbroken” after gunfire broke out at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade and rally on February 14, 2024. The shooting near Union Station killed Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old Kansas City-area radio DJ and mother of two, and wounded 22 other people, according to the Kansas City Police Department’s February 15 update.
The violence occurred as the Chiefs’ celebration in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, was winding down. The team had gathered with fans after winning Super Bowl LVIII, with the rally concluding near Union Station when shots were fired.
What Travis Kelce said
On February 14, Kelce posted a response on X after the shooting. He wrote: “I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.” NBC Sports reported and reproduced the statement.
His message expressed concern for the people who had attended the parade and rally, rather than describing the shooting as an event he had personally witnessed. Reports said Kelce and other Chiefs personnel were safely accounted for and evacuated from the immediate area. Coverage also described players and staff moving from celebration to helping and comforting fans, although individual actions should not be overstated beyond what was specifically reported.

The confirmed toll from the parade shooting
KCPD reported that 23 people were shot. Lopez-Galvan died, while 22 additional victims were injured. The injured victims ranged in age from 8 to 47, and police said at least half of them were younger than 16.
Lopez-Galvan was identified by police as the person who died. She was a Kansas City-area radio DJ and mother of two. Her death placed the focus of the tragedy on the fans and community members who had come downtown to celebrate, many of them with children, rather than solely on the prominent athletes whose parade had drawn the crowd.
The shooting was not reported as a terrorist incident. In a preliminary account issued on February 15, KCPD said investigators had found no connection to terrorism or violent extremism. Police said at that stage that the shooting appeared to have resulted from a dispute involving several people. That was an initial investigative characterization, not a complete resolution of every criminal or legal question that followed.

Federal firearms-trafficking case
In March 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri announced federal firearms-trafficking and straw-purchase charges against three Kansas City men in connection with firearms recovered during the investigation. The Justice Department’s announcement expressly stated that those defendants were not alleged to be among the shooters.
That distinction matters: the federal charges concerned alleged illegal purchases and trafficking of firearms. They were not, by themselves, allegations that the defendants fired the shots at the parade or caused Lopez-Galvan’s death.

State case and Dominic Miller’s plea
Lyndell Mays and Dominic Miller were among the adults charged in the state case connected to the shooting. Later reporting said Miller pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and received a two-year prison sentence after prosecutors dropped the murder charge.
According to the Associated Press account, prosecutors cited the difficulty of disproving claims of self-defense or defense of others under Missouri law. They also said the evidence did not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Miller’s shot caused Lopez-Galvan’s death.

Miller’s weapons plea and the dropped murder charge should not be summarized as a finding that nobody was responsible for the fatality. They reflect a particular prosecutorial and legal determination in one defendant’s case. The status of other defendants and proceedings can change through additional pleas, dismissals, hearings, or trials and should be checked against current court records before publication of any later update.

Why Kelce’s statement was widely reported
Kelce’s response drew attention because he was one of the Chiefs’ most recognizable players and had been at the center of the celebration. But the public significance of the statement lies in its timing: a parade intended to celebrate a championship immediately became a mass-casualty scene, and Kelce used his first public response to acknowledge the people who had been affected.
His words do not establish that he saw the shooting, knew the identity of any suspect, or had firsthand knowledge of how the incident began. The reliable account is narrower: he publicly expressed grief and concern after learning that people attending the Chiefs’ celebration had been shot.
Timeline
- February 14, 2024: Gunfire broke out near Union Station as the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII parade and rally were concluding. Kelce posted that he was “heartbroken” and expressed support for those affected.
- February 15, 2024: KCPD reported that one person had been killed and 22 others wounded. Police identified Lopez-Galvan as the fatality and said the preliminary investigation found no terrorism or violent-extremism connection.
- March 2024: Federal prosecutors announced firearms-trafficking and straw-purchase charges against three Kansas City men. The Justice Department said those defendants were not alleged to be the shooters.
- Later proceedings: Miller pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and received a two-year sentence after prosecutors dropped the murder charge, according to subsequent AP reporting.
What should not be inferred
- Kelce was not reported as having been injured in the shooting.
- His statement does not show that he personally witnessed the gunfire.
- The federal firearms defendants should not be described as the parade shooters without evidence supporting that claim.
- Miller’s weapons plea does not establish that he caused Lopez-Galvan’s death.
- The preliminary police description of a dispute does not answer every question about motive, responsibility, or the later court proceedings.
The most accurate description of the story is therefore retrospective: on February 14, 2024, Kelce publicly responded with a message of heartbreak after a shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration killed one attendee and wounded 22 others. The central human story remains Lopez-Galvan and the injured fans and community members, not the celebrity reaction alone.
