Futurism characterized the thumbnail as AI-altered, but the available reporting does not establish who changed it or independently verify how it was made.
What differed between the thumbnail and the footage?
Futurism’s report describes a 36-minute YouTube video filmed in Croydon. The thumbnail showed Caz on a street with Arabic-script shop signs and a cyclist wearing a black balaclava, presented with a threatening expression. In the corresponding video frame, the signs were in English and the cyclist was a smiling Black man.
Futurism says social media account Right Wing Cope drew attention to the mismatch. The visible differences are the basis of the controversy; the claim that generative AI was used is Futurism’s characterization, not a method independently confirmed in the available reporting. The source does not identify who made the thumbnail change or which tool, if any, was used.
How did the video frame Croydon?
Futurism describes the video as focusing on crime and immigration commentary. It reports that Caz referred to non-white people running errands as “interesting characters.” Yet the scenes described in the report do not consistently match the thumbnail’s threatening presentation: the cyclist recognized Caz, gave him a fist bump, and performed a wheelie.

Futurism reports that Caz then said, “You see, there are friendly people here too, amongst the hostiles,” followed by, “Just surrounded by hostiles. Goodness, gracious me.” The report also says an elderly white woman told him he was “talking absolute nonsense”; it does not name her.
What is established—and what remains unverified?
- Established in Futurism’s account: the thumbnail and corresponding video frame differ in the shop signs and the cyclist’s appearance.
- Attributed, not independently established: Futurism describes the thumbnail as altered with generative AI. The report does not identify the editor or editing tool, and the available material does not establish forensic confirmation.
- Demographic statistic: Futurism reported that 36.2 percent of Croydon residents are immigrants. Its article, as represented here, does not identify the underlying statistical source or reference year, so the figure cannot be independently assessed from that reporting.
- Broader context: Futurism situated the thumbnail alongside pro-white, anti-immigrant AI imagery in the UK and referred to its earlier reporting. That is the publisher’s framing; the prevalence claim is not independently measured here.
- Response: Futurism said Caz did not respond to a request for comment as of its December 7, 2025 publication. That does not establish whether he responded later.
Why the thumbnail matters
A thumbnail is an editorial choice that can shape a viewer’s expectations before they see a video. Here, the contrast reported by Futurism is concrete: the thumbnail appears to present a more threatening street scene than the corresponding footage. That observation is distinct from the separate question of how the thumbnail was altered, which the available account does not resolve.

The incident is therefore best described with careful attribution: Futurism reported a visual mismatch and characterized the thumbnail as AI-altered. The source does not establish the identity of the editor, the tool used, or independent verification of the editing method.
