AJ Styles’ January 2026 trademark filings did not prove he was leaving WWE or joining AEW. They prompted speculation because they arrived amid reports of his planned 2026 in-ring retirement and a career-stakes match. WWE later said Styles had bid the WWE Universe farewell in Georgia and announced him as a 2026 Hall of Fame inductee.
What did AJ Styles file trademarks for?
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office record for serial number 99619439 identifies the mark THE PHENOMENAL AJ STYLES, with Allen Jones listed as the owner. It gives a filing date of January 28, 2026, and a registration date of August 11, 2026, and shows the mark as live and registered. The listed services relate to wrestling news and information and wrestling performances. View the USPTO record.
January reports from Wrestling Observer/F4WOnline and Wrestleview also said Styles filed for the P1 logo. Those reports described related wrestling appearances, performances and interviews, and listed apparel goods including shirts, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, slip-on shoes and shorts. The P1 goods list here is attributed to those reports, not to a separately cited USPTO record. Wrestling Observer/F4WOnline and Wrestleview covered the filings on January 29, 2026.
Why did the filings spark WWE departure speculation?
The timing invited questions. January coverage connected the filings with Styles’ upcoming Royal Rumble match against Gunther and his stated plan to retire from in-ring competition during 2026. Reports noted speculation that he might move to AEW, but presented that as conjecture—not as confirmation of a WWE departure or a deal with another promotion.

A trademark filing identifies a mark and the goods or services associated with it. On its own, it does not establish a performer’s employment status, future booking or plans to sign with another company. The registration of THE PHENOMENAL AJ STYLES confirms the status of that mark, not a change of employer.
What did WWE say afterward?
WWE’s official Hall of Fame announcement said Styles would be inducted in the Class of 2026 and described him as having bid the WWE Universe farewell in Georgia. WWE’s profile also lists him as a 2026 Hall of Fame inductee. These later official statements put the filings in the context of his farewell and Hall of Fame recognition; they do not turn the earlier AEW speculation into a confirmed signing. Did AJ Styles sign with AEW?
The cited filings and January reports do not establish that Styles signed with AEW. The reports described that possibility as speculation. WWE’s later public account emphasized a farewell and Hall of Fame induction, rather than announcing a move to another promotion.
WWE’s official Crown Jewel 2025 video page documents the retirement announcement in its title, while the January reports tied that retirement plan to the rumor cycle. See WWE’s Crown Jewel 2025 video page.
