Cooper Abbott is arrested after his wife Rachel tips police to his concert plans. In the police van, he uses a bicycle spoke to unlock his handcuffs—but Trap ends before showing whether he gets out of custody. Rachel set the concert sting in motion; Lady Raven later helps expose Cooper and get his captive, Spencer, found.
What happens at the end of Trap?
At Lady Raven’s concert, Cooper realizes the unusually heavy security is part of an FBI operation targeting the Butcher—the serial killer he is. After trying to find a way out, he gets backstage, reveals his identity to Lady Raven, and threatens Spencer, whom he has kidnapped, to make her help him leave. She appears to cooperate, but her actions help expose Cooper and save Spencer.
Lady Raven’s plan continues at the Abbott home. Using Cooper’s phone and a livestream, she helps fans locate Spencer. Cooper takes her hostage again and tries to leave, but his family’s intervention slows him down. He briefly evades police by using a SWAT uniform and passing through a neighbor’s home, then returns to his house. There, Rachel reveals that she alerted police.
Rachel has put Cooper’s own drug in a pie. Impaired, he is caught when police storm the home, tase him, and arrest him. As officers take him away, he stops to right Riley’s fallen bicycle and secretly takes a spoke. In the van, he uses it to open his handcuffs.

Did Cooper actually escape?
No completed escape is shown. The last scene establishes that Cooper has freed his hands from the cuffs while still inside the police van. His smile and the handcuff trick suggest he may make another attempt, but the film does not show him leaving the van or escaping custody. Saying that he definitely gets away goes beyond what the ending depicts.
Who set Cooper up?
Rachel, Cooper’s wife, tipped police off that he planned to attend the concert. Variety confirms that she tells Cooper she gave police the tip. Virgin Radio UK’s August 12, 2024 ending account says her suspicions grew after he came home late and she noticed a chemical smell on his clothes; she followed him and found evidence linking him to his victims.

Trap is not directly based on a true story, but Netflix Tudum reported on March 11, 2025, that its premise was partly inspired by Operation Flagship. In 1985, the US Marshals Service and Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department used fake event invitations to lure fugitives to a ticket-pickup operation. Netflix Tudum reports that the agencies sent more than 3,000 invitations and made 101 arrests.
