For a first watch, see the nine theatrical Transformers films in release order. That preserves how the series unfolded for audiences and avoids treating every entry as part of one officially confirmed timeline. If you prefer to follow the broad story eras, an approximate chronology is included below. The best order depends on whether you mean release history, story setting, or the films available on a particular streaming service; those are related but not interchangeable questions.
Transformers movies in theatrical release order
This list includes the 1986 animated feature as well as the later live-action and animated theatrical films. Release order is the simplest way to watch the franchise without assuming its stories fit into one continuous chronology. It also makes clear that the 1986 movie belongs to the theatrical film list even though it is not part of the later live-action run.
- The Transformers: The Movie (1986) — animated feature.
- Transformers (2007).
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009).
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).
- Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).
- Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).
- Bumblebee (2018).
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023).
- Transformers One (2024).
The 1986 film is an animated feature; the later run beginning with Transformers (2007) is the live-action series. Transformers One is a fully CG-animated origin story about Optimus Prime and Megatron, once friends whose changing relationship shapes Cybertron’s fate. Paramount lists its premiere date as September 20, 2024, its runtime as 104 minutes, and its rating as PG. Paramount Pictures’ film page.
There is a reason to include both animated films in a complete theatrical list: “Transformers movies” can refer to the franchise’s theatrical features, not just its live-action titles. The 1986 movie and Transformers One are different animated entries released decades apart, and the latter is a CG-animated origin story. If you want only the live-action movies, the list begins with Transformers (2007), but that is a narrower scope than all the theatrical films.

The 2023 and 2024 entries also have official premiere information in the reviewed sources: Paramount Global Content lists Rise of the Beasts as premiering June 9, 2023, and Paramount Pictures lists Transformers One as premiering September 20, 2024. Those dates help confirm their release-order placement; they do not, by themselves, settle how every movie fits into one continuity.
Optional broad story-era order
If your priority is the setting of each story rather than the order audiences first saw the films, this is a useful broad chronology. It is an approximate viewing guide, not an official ruling that every movie belongs to one seamless continuity.
- Transformers One — an origin story set before the Autobot-Decepticon war.
- Bumblebee — set in 1987.
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts — set in 1994.
- Transformers (2007).
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009).
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).
- Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).
- Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).
Paramount describes Transformers One as taking place before the war and dates Bumblebee to 1987 and Rise of the Beasts to 1994 in its viewing guide. The available official descriptions establish those story eras but do not establish one definitive timeline across all the films. Paramount+’s Transformers viewing guide.
Think of this as a broad-era sequence rather than a precision timeline. The early entries are positioned by their stated story settings: Transformers One comes before the war, followed by the 1987 and 1994 stories. The remaining entries are then arranged as the 2007–2017 run. The available official descriptions do not establish a more exact shared chronology for all nine films, so adding one would suggest more certainty than the sources support.

One practical consequence is that the story-era order is not simply the release list with a few dates swapped. It moves the origin story and the 1980s- and 1990s-set movies ahead of the 2007–2017 titles. That can suit viewers who want to begin with earlier story eras, but it is not the recommended default for a first-time viewer: release order keeps the franchise’s theatrical sequence intact and sidesteps unresolved continuity questions.
Which order should you choose?
- Choose release order for a first watch. It follows the films’ theatrical sequence, including the distinct 1986 animated feature, and does not require settling continuity questions first.
- Choose story-era order for a chronology-focused watch. It puts the origin and 1980s- and 1990s-set stories first, while remaining a practical approximation rather than a definitive canon list.
- Check what “all the movies” means in a catalog. A service’s available titles are not necessarily the complete theatrical film list; a streaming guide may omit films it does not carry.
In short, choose release order if you are new to the series or want to follow its theatrical history. Choose the broad story-era list if your main preference is to start with the oldest stated settings. Neither list claims that each title belongs to one fully reconciled timeline. For a rewatch, there is no need to treat the chronology list as a required viewing sequence; it is an option for readers who specifically want that approach.
It is also useful to separate three different questions: Which movies came out first? Which stories are set earlier? Which films can I watch on a service right now? Release order answers the first, the approximate story-era list addresses the second, and the streaming section below addresses the third as a dated snapshot. A service catalog is not a continuity guide or a complete filmography.
Where to stream the Transformers movies
Streaming catalogs change by date and territory, so a service listing should not be confused with the complete franchise filmography. In a guide published August 19, 2026, Paramount+ listed Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One. It said The Last Knight and the 1986 animated film were not then on the service and warned that availability can change. Check the local Paramount+ catalog before watching; the list describes that service at that time, not availability everywhere or on other platforms. Paramount+’s guide.

This explains why a streaming list may appear to have only seven titles while the theatrical list here has nine. The Paramount+ guide describes seven films it carried at the time it was published; it expressly did not list The Last Knight or the 1986 animated film as available on the service then. That is a catalog distinction, not a reason to remove those movies from the franchise’s theatrical release order.
Before planning a marathon, check the catalog for your location close to the day you want to watch. The cited Paramount+ guide is dated August 19, 2026, and its availability statement is a snapshot, not a promise about future access. The available descriptions do not establish what another streaming service carries, nor do they establish that the same Paramount+ titles are available in every territory. Search by the individual film title if a service’s franchise page does not show the whole list.
The nine-film scope in the release list above is cross-checked against Transformers.tv’s film archive, which identifies itself as a fan archive unaffiliated with Hasbro or Takara Tomy. It is useful for confirming which films are included in the franchise list here, not for deciding official continuity. Paramount+’s streaming guide serves a different purpose: it records titles on that service at a particular date rather than defining the full theatrical film list.
Owning the movies on disc
If you would rather keep the films than rely on a changing streaming catalog, a Transformers movies DVD collection or individual DVD and Blu-ray editions may be worth comparing. No current official US retail listing was published for a specific bundle, edition, included films, or price, so check those details with the seller before buying. In particular, do not assume that a collection includes all nine theatrical films just because its title says “Transformers collection.” Confirm the titles and formats in the package description.

That check matters for this franchise because the complete theatrical list includes the 1986 animated feature as well as the later films. A bundle or individual release may cover only part of the list. The same caution applies to digital or streaming bundles: check exactly which titles are included and whether the offer is current. No particular merchant listing or price is confirmed here.

What is the best order to watch the Transformers movies?
For a first watch, use theatrical release order: begin with The Transformers: The Movie (1986), then continue from Transformers (2007) through Transformers One (2024). It preserves the release sequence and avoids presenting the franchise as one officially confirmed timeline.
How many theatrical Transformers movies are there?
This guide includes nine theatrical features, counting the 1986 animated movie. That is a different count from Paramount+’s August 19, 2026, guide, which listed seven titles then available on that service and did not include The Last Knight or the 1986 movie.
Is the 1986 Transformers movie part of the release order?
Yes. The Transformers: The Movie (1986) is an animated theatrical feature and is first in the release-order list. A list limited to the later live-action run has a narrower scope and begins with Transformers (2007).

Where do Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts go in story order?
The broad story-era order places Bumblebee (set in 1987) before Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (set in 1994). Both come after Transformers One in that approximate chronology, which places the origin story before the Autobot-Decepticon war.
Is Transformers One a prequel, and where should I watch it?
Paramount describes Transformers One as an origin story set before the Autobot-Decepticon war. That puts it first in the optional broad story-era order, but it remains last in theatrical release order because it premiered in 2024.
Are all the Transformers movies in one official timeline?
The available official descriptions do not establish one definitive, seamless timeline across all the entries. The story-era list is explicitly a practical approximation based on the available descriptions, not an official continuity ruling.
Are all nine movies on Paramount+?
Not according to the dated guide cited here. On August 19, 2026, Paramount+ listed seven titles and said The Last Knight and the 1986 movie were not then on the service. Catalogs can change and vary by territory, so check your local listing before viewing.

Not necessarily. No current official US retail listing was published for a particular bundle or its contents. Check the seller’s current product description for the included titles and formats, especially whether it contains the 1986 animated feature and the later theatrical films you want.
The Bottom Line
For a first watch, follow release order and include all nine theatrical features, starting with the 1986 animated movie. Use the story-era sequence only as an approximate alternative, and check a dated local catalog if you are choosing films by streaming availability.
