The cost of being visible
TikTok can create connection and expose creators to abuse at the same time. Trans creators may face hostile comments, demands for medical details, coordinated reporting and the expectation that they educate people who approach them in bad faith.
Good Good Good reported that the TikTok-a-Thon’s accounts were repeatedly interrupted or banned through mass reporting and that Jory said the 2024 event would be her last year co-hosting because of online hate. That is a time-specific report, not proof that she has permanently left the event or stopped creating. Her current account status and future role require a newer first-party statement.
Why moderation is part of the labor
- Filtering abuse consumes time that could otherwise go to creating or fundraising.
