TRACES is a documentary by Alisa Kovalenko and Marysia Nikitiuk about Ukrainian women who survived conflict-related sexual violence and torture during Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Through their testimony and mutual support, the film connects personal accounts with a collective pursuit of truth, care and accountability.
What is the documentary TRACES about?
The film follows six women whose stories span Russia’s aggression against Ukraine from 2014 to 2023, according to its producer, 2Brave Productions. Their experiences include sexual violence and torture. The documentary presents the women’s accounts; it should not be treated as a court finding about the criminal liability of any particular person. The producer’s film page describes the project and its participants.
One thread is Iryna Dovhan’s work documenting survivors’ testimonies in de-occupied territories. Dovhan, a former captive and head of SEMA Ukraine, connects the women’s stories to a broader effort to support survivors and seek accountability. The film is not only a set of individual testimonies: solidarity among the women is part of its subject.
Who are the women in TRACES?
The producer identifies six participants as Iryna, Liudmyla, Halyna, Tetiana, Olha and Mefodiivna, members of SEMA Ukraine, a community of women survivors of sexual gender-based and conflict-related sexual violence. The United Nations account names Iryna Dovhan, Olha Cherniak, Tetiana Vasylenko, Galyna Tyshchenko, Nina and Liudmyla Mefodivna Mymrykova. Spellings and transliterations differ between sources.

Director Alisa Kovalenko has also publicly described her own experience of sexual violence during captivity in Donbas and her connection to SEMA Ukraine. The film’s production and advocacy context is therefore closely connected to survivor solidarity, while the participants’ own stories remain central. The Mukwege Foundation describes the project as survivor-led advocacy, with screenings and discussions intended to address stigma and survivor needs around care, protection, truth and accountability.
How the film approaches testimony and accountability
TRACES brings personal testimony into a collective frame. It asks viewers to attend to what survivors say and to the support they build together, rather than reducing the women to a single account of victimization. Director Kovalenko has said that stigma, shame and fear remain barriers to speaking about the subject.

That framing matters: the film is a documentary and an act of testimony, not a substitute for formal investigations or judicial findings. Iryna Dovhan describes the film as part of her continuing effort to see perpetrators held accountable. The UN’s coverage quotes participant Galyna Tyshchenko calling it “our act of resistance.”
