For offline playback inside YouTube, use YouTube Premium. For a file of your own upload, use YouTube Studio or Google Takeout. For authorized downloads with format or batch control, yt-dlp offers the most flexibility; 4K Video Downloader Plus adds a desktop interface. FFmpeg converts files you already have, but does not download from YouTube.
First, decide what you mean by “convert”
- Download: Save a local media file, such as MP4 or MKV.
- Remux: Put existing audio and video streams into a different container without re-encoding, where the codecs allow it.
- Transcode: Re-encode audio or video into a different codec or format, such as H.264 video in an MP4 container.
- Extract audio: Create an audio file such as MP3 or M4A from a video.
- Save subtitles: Retrieve available captions or subtitle tracks; not every video has them in the language you need.
- Offline viewing: Save a video for playback in YouTube’s controlled app or browser experience, rather than obtaining a transferable file.
If you only need to watch during a trip, a downloader may be unnecessary. If you need an editable or portable file, offline playback is not the same thing as downloading an MP4.
Use only content you are authorized to save
Use these tools only for videos you own, content released under a license that permits downloading, public-domain material, or situations where you have permission or a legally applicable right to save the file. Copyright rules depend on the content, license, purpose, and applicable law; it is not accurate to say that every download is automatically illegal or automatically allowed.
YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading, reproducing, or otherwise using content except where the service permits it, you have permission, or applicable law allows it. YouTube’s API policies also restrict applications from enabling downloads or separating audio and video outside permitted YouTube experiences. A tool’s disclaimer does not override copyright law or YouTube’s terms. 4K Download’s terms place responsibility on users and prohibit copyright-infringing use.

Best tools by use case
YouTube Premium: offline viewing without a portable file
Premium is the official choice when the goal is watching offline in YouTube, for example while traveling or saving mobile data. Its downloads are intended for playback within YouTube, not as ordinary files to move into an editor or media library. Availability and features vary by country, device, account, and video. See YouTube’s offline video help or the Premium page.
YouTube Studio: a quick download of your own upload
On desktop, YouTube’s creator download instructions give this path:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video you uploaded.
- Open the video’s menu.
- Choose Download.
YouTube says the download is MP4 and may be 720p or 360p depending on the video. An individual video can generally be downloaded up to five times in 24 hours. Downloads may be unavailable for removed videos, videos with copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, videos using certain preapproved audio tracks, or videos that have reached the limit.

Do not assume this is the untouched original upload or a full-resolution master. Check the downloaded file’s resolution, frame rate, audio, and metadata. If you still have the original camera file or editing project, preserve it as your master copy.
Google Takeout: an account export for your own archive
Google Takeout is the official route to export your own YouTube data in bulk. It is more appropriate than repeatedly downloading individual uploads when you want an account-wide backup. Review the export selections before starting, then retain the original archive until you have checked that the expected files are present and usable. Takeout is not a way to download other people’s videos.
yt-dlp: free control for technically comfortable users
yt-dlp is a free command-line tool that supports many sites and offers options for formats, playlists, subtitles, metadata, and audio extraction. Its extractor compatibility can change as sites change. Get it from the official installation guide; it provides Windows, macOS, and Linux binaries as well as package-manager and Python installation routes. The project currently documents Python 3.10 or newer for CPython and 3.11 or newer for PyPy. It strongly recommends FFmpeg, FFprobe, yt-dlp-ejs, and a supported JavaScript runtime for full functionality.

yt-dlp -F "VIDEO_URL"
yt-dlp -t mp4 "VIDEO_URL"The first command downloads using yt-dlp’s default selection. The second lists formats actually offered for that video. The third uses yt-dlp’s MP4-oriented preset for format selection, merging, and remuxing. YouTube may deliver video and audio separately; merging them requires FFmpeg. An explicit alternative is:
yt-dlp -f "bv*+ba/b" --merge-output-format mp4 "VIDEO_URL"“MP4” describes a container, not a guarantee that every device supports the codecs inside it. The source must also provide the resolution you want: a tool cannot turn a 720p video into genuine 4K.
4K Video Downloader Plus: a desktop interface
4K Video Downloader Plus is a third-party GUI option for users who prefer pasting a URL rather than using a terminal. The vendor advertises MP4 and MKV, audio extraction to MP3, M4A, and OGG, subtitle downloads, and playlist, channel, and search-result downloads. It lists 720p through 8K support where the source provides those streams; that is not a guarantee that every video is available at those resolutions. The vendor lists Windows 11 or newer, macOS 12 or newer, and Ubuntu 22.04 64-bit GNOME or newer compatibility.
At the prices displayed on the vendor buying page when checked for this article on October 8, 2026, plans included a free Starter tier with quantity limitations, Lite at $15 per year, Personal at $25 for a lifetime license, and Pro at $45 for a lifetime license. Prices, taxes, regional availability, and plan terms can change. The vendor also lists a 14-day refund policy for online license purchases and up to three computer activations for a license key, subject to its terms. Buying a license does not grant rights to download content.
Download desktop software only from the official vendor or project page, rather than search-ad lookalikes or mirrors. Do not enter a Google password into a third-party page that imitates Google. In-app authorization features, where offered, do not make an otherwise unauthorized download permissible.
FFmpeg: convert a file you already have
FFmpeg is a media-processing toolkit, not a YouTube downloader. Use it on files you are entitled to process. To transcode a local MKV file to H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4 container:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4To extract audio without re-encoding when the source audio codec is compatible with M4A:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3Transcoding can reduce quality, especially when converting already compressed audio or video. Remuxing generally avoids another encode, but changing a container alone will not make an unsupported codec playable.

Choose a format without confusing container and quality
- MP4: A widely used container that can carry different codecs. H.264 video with AAC audio is a common compatibility target, but check the requirements of your editor or device.
- MKV: A flexible container often useful for archiving multiple tracks. Some devices and editors support it less consistently than MP4.
- MP3: A broadly supported lossy audio format. It cannot recover audio detail absent from the source, and converting repeatedly between lossy formats compounds quality loss.
- M4A: An audio-only container commonly used with AAC audio. Copying a compatible source stream avoids re-encoding; converting to a different codec does not.
- WAV: Useful in some editing workflows, but a larger file does not mean better source quality if the audio began as a compressed stream.
Resolution describes image dimensions; codec describes how audio or video is encoded; container describes how streams and metadata are packaged; bitrate is one factor in data rate. A filename ending in .mp4 does not establish resolution or codec. Preserve the best authorized source file before making any conversion.
Common problems and safe recovery steps
The downloaded video has no sound
A video-only format may have been selected, or separate audio and video streams may not have merged because FFmpeg is missing. List available formats with yt-dlp -F "VIDEO_URL", then use a video-plus-audio selection such as yt-dlp -t mp4 "VIDEO_URL" if appropriate. Confirm that FFmpeg is installed as an executable; a Python package named “ffmpeg” is not the same thing.
The requested format is unavailable
Run yt-dlp -F "VIDEO_URL" and choose a format actually listed. Do not assume a particular resolution, codec, or container is offered for every video.
The MP4 will not play
The file may use an unsupported codec, may have been incompletely downloaded, or may not contain the streams its extension suggests. Inspect it with:
ffprobe input.mp4If the file is intact but the target device cannot decode its codecs, transcode it with FFmpeg to a combination that the device supports. Renaming the extension does not convert the media.

yt-dlp stops working
YouTube’s delivery systems change, so update yt-dlp before retrying. The project warns users running versions older than 90 days to update. For an installation that supports its updater, use:
yt-dlp -UIf the problem persists, a verbose run can help identify the failure:
yt-dlp -v "VIDEO_URL"The project documents additional extractor dependencies, including a supported JavaScript runtime. Do not try to bypass access controls. Authentication can expose account security risks, and sharing browser cookies with third-party tools is not a routine troubleshooting step.
The audio sounds worse after conversion
A higher MP3 bitrate cannot restore information missing from the source stream. Choose the best available authorized audio source, avoid repeated lossy conversions, and use stream copying rather than re-encoding when the codec and target format are compatible.
You need captions or a transcript
Downloading a video and obtaining a transcript are separate tasks. yt-dlp can save available subtitles or automatic captions; languages, availability, and accuracy vary by video. For example:
yt-dlp --write-subs --sub-langs "en" "VIDEO_URL"
yt-dlp --write-auto-subs --sub-langs "en" "VIDEO_URL"A web converter looks easier
Anonymous browser converters can be ad-heavy, deceptive, unstable, or unclear about how they handle URLs and uploaded files. Avoid services that require an extension for a simple conversion, request Google credentials outside an official Google flow, or ask you to upload a private or sensitive video. For an authorized local file, a reputable desktop tool or FFmpeg gives you more control over where the file goes.
