Is Top Gun 3 happening?
Yes. At CinemaCon on April 16, 2026, Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein confirmed that a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick was in development and that a script was underway. The Associated Press also reported the studio’s announcement of a third Top Gun movie, with Cruise returning. The Los Angeles Times reported Greenstein’s confirmation, and the AP covered the announcement.

That is a development-stage confirmation, not confirmation that production has begun. The phrase “priority” and the suggestion that Cruise “might be ready” are not established as separate production facts in the announcement coverage.
Is Tom Cruise returning for Top Gun 3?
Yes. The CinemaCon announcement coverage names Cruise as returning. Bruckheimer, producer of the earlier films, is also named as reuniting with Cruise. The reports do not establish a complete returning cast.

“Script underway” should not be read as “ready to shoot.” The reports describe development, but provide no confirmed production timetable.
When will Top Gun 3 come out, and is it filming yet?
The announcement coverage gives no release date or target year, and does not report that filming has started. Without those details, a release prediction would be speculation rather than a confirmed schedule.

What should you watch before the third film?
Top Gun: Maverick (2022) is the direct predecessor to the announced sequel and the relevant catch-up film. The original Top Gun opened in 1986; viewers interested in the franchise’s starting point can watch it first. The Los Angeles Times’ announcement coverage supplies that franchise context.
