Vudu is now presented publicly as Fandango at Home, though many people still search for “Vudu.” A playback error can come from the service, a particular title, your account or location, your network, the app, an unsupported device, or an HDMI display path. Start by checking whether another title plays, then test the same title on another supported device or browser and, if possible, another network. Those comparisons usually tell you where to focus before you reinstall anything.
The service’s official site links to Customer Support and Supported Devices. Its terms describe access as U.S.-only and dependent on a compatible device and high-speed internet. The steps below are diagnostic as well as corrective: after each one, retry the same title and note what changed.
Quick fixes to try first
- Play a different movie or episode on the same device.
- Close the app completely, reopen it, and restart the playback device.
- Restart your modem and router; pause downloads and other heavy network activity.
- Install available app, device-software, and browser updates.
- Sign out of Fandango at Home, restart the app, then sign back in.
If those do not help, use the pattern of the failure to choose the next test. Avoid factory-resetting your router or repeatedly renting or buying the title while you troubleshoot.
1. Find out whether one title or all titles fail
When this applies: Any playback error, especially if you are unsure whether the problem is your device or the movie.

Try another title on the same device. If that works, the issue may be specific to the original title, its availability, or your library entitlement. Then try the original title on another supported device or the web player.
- Another title plays: focus on the original title, rental or purchase status, and account.
- The same title fails on multiple devices: a title, account, licensing, or service-side issue becomes more likely.
- The title works elsewhere: troubleshoot the first device, app, browser, or connection.
- A trailer plays but the purchased or rented title does not: this is a useful comparison, not proof that the title entitlement is valid.
- Free content also fails: network, app, device, or service problems are more plausible.
If a single title fails across supported devices and networks, local fixes may not resolve it; contact support with the title and account details.
2. Test another supported device or browser
When this applies: Playback fails on one TV, box, console, phone, tablet, or computer.

Try the same title using another device already available to you, such as the web player or a supported streaming device. If it works there, your account and the title are less likely to be the cause; concentrate on the first device’s app, firmware, network connection, or display path. If it fails everywhere, test the account, title, location, and service rather than repeatedly changing settings on one device.
Do not assume an older device remains compatible because it once ran Vudu. The current official help material lists platform families including Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xfinity Flex/X1, selected LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Vizio and Xumo TVs, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Exact model and quality support vary. The same help material says some devices stopped working with the app after December 10, 2024. Check the current official help and device information before trying to repair an older device.

- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
3. Fully restart the app and playback device
When this applies: The app freezes, playback will not start, or a device has been in standby for a long time.
- Exit the app rather than merely leaving it in the background.
- Restart the TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or console using its own restart or power controls.
- Open the app and retry the title.
A standby-and-wake cycle may leave a stuck playback process running. The restart route differs by platform, so use that device’s system menu or manufacturer guidance rather than a universal button combination. If a full restart helps only temporarily, update the app and system software next.
4. Check the connection, not just the speed number
When this applies: Video buffers, drops quality, stops mid-playback, or works better at certain times.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streaming in the home.
- Restart the modem and router, then allow them to reconnect fully.
- Move the playback device closer to the router or test Ethernet if available.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or, as a brief diagnostic, cellular data where practical. Cellular streaming may use substantial data.
- Run a speed test on the same network and near the playback device.
A speed test can look adequate while Wi-Fi is intermittent, congested, or losing packets. If Ethernet or another network works while the usual Wi-Fi does not, investigate signal quality, interference, router placement, or router/DNS issues. Do not factory-reset the router as an early step; that can erase network names, passwords, parental controls, and other settings.
Old Vudu guides published bandwidth figures, but those are historical and should not be treated as current universal requirements. The current terms refer to high-speed internet without establishing one speed threshold for every device and quality level.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
5. Update the app, device software, and browser
When this applies: The problem began after a system change, the app behaves inconsistently, or your device has pending updates.
Check for updates to the Fandango at Home/Vudu app, TV or streaming-device firmware, phone or tablet operating system, console software, and desktop browser. Restart after installing updates and test again. If no update is offered, continue to the app cache or reinstall step rather than assuming the device is unsupported; verify its model against current official support information.
6. Refresh your account session and check device management
When this applies: You can sign in but playback or access to a library title fails, or the app may have a stale session.
- Sign out on the failing device.
- Fully close or restart the app.
- Sign in to the account that owns or rented the title and retry.
- If the account page offers it, review Manage Devices for device registrations or limits.
The account interface includes a Manage Devices area. Signing back in can refresh authorization, but it cannot resolve an expired rental, a purchase on another account, or a title availability issue by itself.
7. Clear the app cache or reinstall it
When this applies: The issue is isolated to one device and restarting or updating has not helped.

- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote
Menu names vary, and these are general platform procedures rather than a guarantee that every device exposes the same controls:
- Android, Android TV/Google TV, or Fire TV: open the device’s app settings, force-stop the app, and clear its cache. Clear app data only if needed; it can remove sign-in state and local settings.
- Roku: remove and reinstall the channel/app, then restart the Roku if required by the platform.
- iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV: restart and update first; delete and reinstall the app if the platform permits.
- Smart TVs and consoles: use their app-management controls or manufacturer’s reinstall procedure.
Before removing an app or clearing data, make sure you can sign in again. If your device stores downloads for offline viewing, they may need to be downloaded again. If reinstalling does not change the result, do not repeat it; test the network, account, compatibility, and HDMI path.
8. Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, and browser extensions
When this applies: Playback fails only on a computer, location detection appears wrong, or privacy/network tools are active.
For a diagnostic test, turn off a VPN or proxy and retry. Fandango at Home’s terms limit service and content access to the United States, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico; a VPN, proxy, or travel connection may make access fail or appear out of region. Do not use a VPN to bypass geographic restrictions.
In a browser, temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy or script-blocking extensions, and download managers, then reload the site. A private window can help isolate cookies and extensions, though it may also block or reset site permissions. If playback works without an extension, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.

9. Verify the account, library, rental, and location
When this applies: Sign-in succeeds but a particular purchased or rented title will not play.
- Open My Library and confirm the title is associated with the signed-in account.
- Check that you used the email/account that made the purchase or rental; people sometimes have more than one account.
- Check whether the rental period has expired.
- Confirm the title is available in your current territory and that you are accessing the U.S.-only service from an eligible location.
- Temporarily disable VPN or proxy services for testing.
Do not rent or purchase the title again as a troubleshooting step. If the account and rental details appear correct but the title fails across devices, give support the title and transaction context without sending payment-card details.
10. Isolate HDMI, HDCP, and external-display problems
When this applies: You hear sound but see a black screen, the error appears only with an external display, or playback stops through a soundbar, receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV.
- Temporarily remove splitters, capture devices, HDMI switches, and receivers from the path.
- Try another HDMI input and, if available, a known-good cable.
- Restart the TV and playback device after changing connections.
- Confirm the TV and playback device support the selected output quality.
- If direct connection works, reconnect intermediary components one at a time.
This test isolates a protected-content (HDCP) or signal-path issue; it does not prove the cable is faulty. Buying a new cable is not a general fix for playback errors.
11. Check browser limits, device support, or contact support
When this applies: App troubleshooting has not identified the cause, browser playback differs from app playback, or an older device may no longer be supported.
The official help page identifies Safari and Edge for HDX web playback and lists Chrome and Firefox as SD-only on the web. That is a quality limitation, not a statement that Chrome and Firefox cannot play at all. If video plays in SD in one of those browsers, it may be expected behavior rather than an account fault. For HDX, try a current Safari or Edge version.
If the browser reports protected-content playback, enable its DRM/protected-content permission. The help page’s computer guidance describes an approximately Intel Core i5-class processor or equivalent, 2 GB RAM, and an HD-capable screen and graphics system; treat that as stated guidance, not a guarantee for every future system. UHD also depends on compatible hardware and the complete playback path. See the current official help information for device and quality details.

If the device should be supported and the problem remains, go to the service’s Customer Support area. Include the exact error text, movie/episode, device brand and model, app or browser version, system/firmware version, whether other titles and devices work, connection type, and whether a VPN or HDMI equipment was involved. Provide the account email if requested, but never send your password or payment-card number.

Platform notes
- Roku: If one channel is affected, remove and reinstall it using Roku’s channel controls, then restart the device. Confirm the exact model is currently supported.
- Fire TV: Use application settings to force-stop and clear cache before clearing data. Clearing data can sign you out.
- Apple TV: Update tvOS and the app, restart the device, and reinstall if the model allows it.
- Android TV/Google TV: Check app cache, system updates, and the exact device model. Clearing app data may remove sign-in and local settings.
- Smart TVs: App controls and update paths vary by manufacturer and year; check the model against current support rather than relying on an old Vudu list.
- Xbox and PlayStation: Update system software and the app, then restart the console. Check supported model and quality details.
- Android and iPhone/iPad: Update the operating system and app; force-close and relaunch. Reinstall only after confirming you can sign back in and understanding that offline downloads may need restoring.
- Web browsers: Test a current Safari or Edge for HDX, allow protected content when prompted, clear site data, and temporarily disable extensions.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset your router as the first network fix.
- Do not repeatedly rent or buy the same title while troubleshooting.
- Do not install unofficial APKs or modified apps.
- Do not assume an older device is still supported because it worked in the past.
- Do not treat SD playback in Chrome or Firefox as proof that your account is broken.
- Do not buy replacement hardware until you have checked support, account status, network behavior, and the HDMI path.
