This countdown makes its own judgment, weighing legibility and execution, placement, text or translation, and the gap between a tattoo’s intended meaning and how it looks to viewers. “Worst” here means visually awkward or especially open to criticism—not that a player’s personal story is unimportant.
How this countdown judges the tattoos
The ranking is an editorial selection, not an NBA designation or a settled consensus. It draws on examples discussed by 11 Points, Bleacher Report (whose list dates to 2011), and RadarOnline. Those outlets supply descriptions and opinions, not a shared standard. The order below weighs how clearly a design reads, how conspicuous its placement is, and whether its reported concept lands as intended.
The 10 worst NBA tattoos
-
Shawn Marion’s “The Matrix” lettering
Marion’s Chinese-character tattoo was intended to evoke his nickname, according to 11 Points. That article reports Hanzi Smatter’s rendering as “Demon Bird Mothballs.” The translation claim is disputed and is not independently verified here, so it is best treated as a cautionary tale about choosing foreign-language text—not as a definitive translation.
-
Kenyon Martin’s lip-print neck tattoo
11 Points and Bleacher Report report that the lips came from a kiss print by Martin’s then-girlfriend. The gesture may have had personal meaning, but a lip print on the neck is an unusually conspicuous design, making it an easy target for a subjective worst-of list.

-
Stephon Marbury’s Starbury star
11 Points and RadarOnline connect the star tattoo on Marbury’s head to his Starbury brand or clothing line. Its brand association gives it a clear concept; the head placement makes that concept impossible to miss. The criticism here is about the combination of scale and visibility, not whether the mark served its intended purpose.
-
Tim Duncan’s hard-to-place shoulder figure
11 Points calls the image a court jester, while Bleacher Report describes it as jester-, wizard-, or clown-like. That range of readings makes the tattoo a candidate on legibility grounds: viewers do not seem to agree on what they are seeing. It does not establish what Duncan or the artist intended.

-
DeShawn Stevenson’s Abraham Lincoln portrait
RadarOnline highlights the Lincoln portrait on Stevenson’s neck, and Bleacher Report also includes it. A recognizable historical figure is an ambitious choice for a prominent portrait tattoo; the list-makers’ inclusion of this one reflects their judgment of its visual result, not an objective measure of portrait quality.
-
Chris Andersen’s “Free Bird” neck lettering
Bleacher Report singles out the words on Andersen’s neck while also criticizing his broader colorful tattoo coverage. The phrase itself is readable, but the outlet’s objection is to how it works as part of an already conspicuous look. That assessment is aesthetic opinion, rather than a claim about the tattoo’s personal significance.

-
Marcin Gortat’s Michael Jordan leg portrait
Bleacher Report criticizes the execution of Gortat’s Jordan likeness. Portrait tattoos invite close comparison with the person they depict, so any weakness in resemblance becomes especially noticeable. This entry reflects that writer’s opinion and should not be mistaken for a technical assessment by an independent tattoo expert.
-
Derrick Rose’s “Poohdini” portrait
Bleacher Report presents a genuine story behind Rose’s “Poohdini” tattoo but objects to the portrait’s appearance. That split matters: a tattoo can be meaningful to its wearer and still look awkward to an outside viewer. The criticism belongs to the list-maker; it does not erase the reported personal context.

Richard Jefferson’s uneven tattoo work
11 Points criticizes the visible execution and alignment of Jefferson’s tattoos. The fairest version of that complaint is limited to what the images and article describe: some work appears uneven. It is not a basis for claims about the artist, the cost, or the process behind it.
-
Marquis Daniels’s cartoon scene
11 Points features a cartoon tattoo and judges its visual effect harshly. The concept’s cartoon style makes it distinctive, but the source’s negative reaction is subjective. A viewer can find the scene unsettling without drawing conclusions about Daniels or his state of mind.

Why a “worst” list cannot settle the question
Other examples appear in Bleacher Report’s 2011 list, including Mike Bibby’s family portraits, Jason Williams’s knuckle lettering, Reggie Miller’s abdominal design, Carmelo Anthony’s “WB” mark, Allen Iverson’s neck lettering, and Michael Beasley’s “Supercool Beas” design. Their presence there shows how broad the pool of candidates is; it does not make any one ranking authoritative.
Personal meaning is another reason to separate the design from the wearer. AS USA’s June 3, 2018 feature reports that Kevin Durant explained his Tupac portrait as reflecting the rapper’s example, and that J.R. Smith said he had lost count after reaching roughly 70 tattoos in an interview with The New York Times. RadarOnline reports Matt Barnes described individual tattoos as stories from his life. These are secondary-source accounts; readers seeking exact wording or fuller context should consult the original interviews. A visual ranking can judge a tattoo’s readability or placement, but it cannot determine what it means to the person who chose it.
