If Hulu captions appear early or late, drift after buffering, or go out of step after an ad, first check whether the problem affects one title or all of Hulu. That quick comparison helps distinguish a title-specific caption problem from an app, device, browser, or audio issue. Try the low-risk fixes below in order; there is no general Hulu subtitle-delay control documented in Hulu’s caption guidance.
First, identify what is out of sync
“Out of sync” can describe several different problems. Captions may appear before the dialogue or after it; start correctly and drift over time; continue from the program during an ad; or return at the wrong point after pausing, seeking, or buffering. Sometimes the captions are timed to the picture, but the TV or an external speaker delays the audio. A wrong language or version of the caption track can also make the text seem mismatched.
Before changing settings, try another episode of the same series, then another Hulu title. Reopen the affected title from the beginning and, if possible, test it on Hulu.com or another supported device. Hulu’s supported-device list includes browsers, phones and tablets, streaming players, game consoles, and selected TVs; exact availability depends on the device and model (Hulu supported devices).

10 ways to fix Hulu subtitles out of sync
1. Turn captions off and back on
Open the playback controls, select Captions/Subtitles or CC, and turn captions off. Stop or exit the video, reopen it, then turn on the intended language track. Control names and locations vary by device and app version; Hulu’s caption instructions are the reference for managing captions.

This can reload a temporary caption-rendering or playback state. Confirm that the selected language matches the audio. If the timing is still wrong, move on rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.
2. Restart the title or return to an earlier point
Exit the episode completely and reopen it. Start from the beginning, or jump back several minutes and let playback stabilize. Avoid rapid scrubbing while testing. If the captions go wrong after an ad, note the point and check whether restarting the title reproduces the problem. This resets the playback session; it does not repair a faulty caption file.
3. Force-close and relaunch Hulu
Close Hulu, remove it from the device’s recent-app list, or use the device’s Force stop or Quit option if available. Then launch Hulu again and test the same title. Pressing Home may only suspend Hulu on some TVs and streaming devices, so use the device’s actual close option when possible. 4. Power-cycle the device and audio equipment
Close Hulu, turn off the TV or streaming device, and briefly unplug the affected equipment before reconnecting it. If you use a soundbar, AV receiver, or Bluetooth speaker, restart that equipment too. Hulu includes power-cycling in its audio and buffering troubleshooting guidance (audio issues; buffering issues).
If the captions line up with the picture but speech comes late, test the TV’s built-in speakers instead of Bluetooth or an external audio system. Check the TV or receiver’s audio-delay and passthrough settings. That symptom points to audio output or processing, not necessarily Hulu’s caption timing.
5. Clear Hulu’s app cache or browser site data
On Hulu.com, clear Hulu’s cached site data in the browser’s privacy or site settings, then reload and sign in again if needed. Clearing cookies may end your current session. Hulu’s troubleshooting materials recommend clearing browser cache for playback problems (audio issues; buffering issues).

On a streaming device, the steps differ. Some Android TV and Fire TV devices expose a path such as Settings → Apps → Hulu → Clear cache. Roku generally relies on app removal and reinstallation or a system restart rather than a universal per-app cache control. Smart TVs may put app-data controls under storage, application management, or support settings. Do not assume one menu path applies to every platform. Clear data is more disruptive than clearing cache and may sign you out or remove local settings.

6. Update Hulu and the device software
Check the device’s app store for a Hulu update. Install pending updates for the TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, browser, or operating system, then restart and test again. An update may resolve a compatibility or playback bug, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every caption problem. Check Hulu’s supported-device list if you are unsure whether your model is supported.
7. Compare with another supported device or Hulu.com
Play the same title on a different platform—for example, compare a TV app with Hulu.com on a computer, or a streaming player with a phone. Hulu lists supported platforms including Hulu.com, mobile devices, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox, PlayStation, select smart TVs, Nintendo Switch, and Android TV; support varies by model (supported devices).

- The same title fails across devices: note its episode and timestamp, then report it to Hulu.
- Every title fails across devices: check for wider network, account, or service problems.
Some eligible subscribers may also be able to access Hulu content through Disney+, but title availability and access depend on eligibility, location, rollout, and device restrictions. It is not a universal workaround (Disney+ guidance on Hulu access).
8. Check browser extensions, VPNs, and proxies
If the problem happens on Hulu.com, temporarily disable ad blockers, script blockers, caption or media-control extensions, and other privacy tools. Try a private or incognito window and another supported browser. If you use a VPN or proxy, test briefly without it. Re-enable tools one at a time if the problem clears so you can identify a conflict. These are isolation tests, not proof that any one extension or VPN causes caption drift. Hulu’s troubleshooting materials address browser playback and related browser or proxy issues (audio troubleshooting; Hulu troubleshooting categories).

Connection troubleshooting is most relevant when captions drift after buffering, playback interruptions, or changes in stream quality. Pause other high-bandwidth downloads or streams, move closer to Wi-Fi, or test Ethernet if practical. Restart the modem and router if Hulu is also buffering or skipping, then retest under stable conditions. Hulu’s guidance includes power-cycling and, for computer playback, trying a wired connection when wireless streaming is unstable (buffering guidance; Windows and Mac troubleshooting).

A more stable connection can reduce interruptions, but it cannot correct a caption track that was timed incorrectly. If other services work and only one Hulu title has the problem, buying a faster internet plan is unlikely to fix that title’s captions.
10. Reinstall Hulu, then report a reproducible problem
If the issue affects one device and survives a restart, cache clearing, and updates, uninstall Hulu, restart the device, and reinstall the app from its official app store. You will need to sign in again, and some local settings may be removed. Reinstalling is a last local reset—not a way to repair a Hulu-side caption asset.
If the issue remains, contact Hulu through its Help Center or contact workflow. Include the title and episode, approximate timestamp, caption language, device model, app or browser version if available, whether other titles are affected, and whether the problem also occurs on another device. Mention if it begins after an ad, pause, seek, or buffering event. A short recording or photo can help if Hulu’s support process permits it.

If one episode or title is consistently mistimed on more than one supported device while other Hulu titles work, local resets are unlikely to provide a lasting fix. Treat it as a possible title-specific caption or playback issue and report the reproducible details to Hulu. A problem confined to one device points instead toward that device, its app, or its audio chain. If picture and dialogue are out of sync too, isolate the TV or external audio equipment before assuming the captions are at fault.
Hulu’s public caption guidance does not document a general manual subtitle-offset slider. Caption styling controls—such as font, color, or background—normally do not change timing, and TV caption menus are not a universal way to alter Hulu’s delivered caption timing. Avoid factory-resetting a TV or buying new hardware as an early step; first compare a title on another device and work through the least disruptive fixes.
