No authoritative top ten of Batman: The Animated Series episodes exists. Published rankings disagree, and the historical fan poll we can cite is from 2002. The list below is an editorial ranking built on stated criteria, limited to the original series that aired from 1992 to 1995. Where a critic or poll backs an entry, we say so. Where the choice is ours, we say that too.
How this list was built
The criteria below are our editorial lens, not a scoring system taken from any published ranking. Each pick should do at least one of the following well:
- Reinventing a villain. The episode gives a rogue a new emotional or moral center rather than simply staging another scheme.
- Emotional character work. The story changes how we understand Batman, Robin, or a supporting figure.
- Distinctive structure. The episode is framed in an unusual way, such as a card game of boasts or a two-part origin told across two half-hours.
- Detective storytelling. Batman works a case from clues rather than brute force.
- Tonal range. The list should not all sound the same. Horror, melodrama, comedy and adventure each deserve a place.
Scope. The series was followed by The New Batman Adventures, and some online lists blend the two. Entries such as “Mad Love” and “Over the Edge” belong to the follow-up, so they are excluded here. Several picks below are multi-part stories; they count as one entry, and the number of parts is noted each time.
The ten episodes
1. “Heart of Ice” (Mr. Freeze)
This is the most consistently praised episode on this list. TVLine ranks it first among the series’ episodes, and ComicBook.com also includes it. Victor Fries is trying to save his wife Nora, who is frozen, while he fights GothCorp executive Ferris Boyle. The episode turns Mr. Freeze from a cold-hearted gimmick into a tragic figure, which is why it leads this list.

2. “Almost Got ’Im”
Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and Killer Croc meet for a card game and trade stories about how each nearly beat Batman. The frame is simple, but it lets the show play its villains against each other and undercut their egos. The World’s Finest episode guide gives its original airdate as November 10, 1992.
3. “Robin’s Reckoning” (two parts)
Dick Grayson’s parents were murdered by mobster Tony Zucco. The two-part story follows his bond with Bruce Wayne and his drive for revenge, and it asks what justice means to a boy who wants to hurt someone. ComicBook.com calls it an Emmy-worthy, definitive animated take on Dick Grayson, which is the publication’s opinion rather than an award.
Rank #2
4. “Two-Face” (two parts)
This two-part origin gives Harvey Dent a recognizably human life before his fall. ComicBook.com praises it for showing Batman unable to stop a friend from falling. It is a character tragedy that stands apart from the Mr. Freeze story at number one.
5. “The Demon’s Quest” (two parts)
This two-part Ra’s al Ghul story is more far-reaching than the usual Gotham setup. ComicBook.com highlights its international adventure as a break from the detective formula, and that departure is why it earns a place here.

A two-part Clayface story built around Matt Hagen, a actor-turned-monster whose tragedy is more human than the usual mutant horror. The horror tone gives the list range beyond crime drama.
7. “Joker’s Favor”
This is the episode where Harley Quinn debuts. It is included for villain reinvention, since the show’s most influential supporting villain entered the series here.

8. “The Laughing Fish”
Joker’s scheme to poison a seafood supply is the kind of case Batman solves by tracing clues. It is a clean detective episode, and it shows the show’s taste for grounded plots.
9. “Beware the Gray Ghost”
The episode frames a boy’s memories of a television hero, and the Gray Ghost is voiced by Adam West. Its structure and affection for the source material make it a standout among the show’s more unusual episodes.

The World’s Finest archive records a 2002 anniversary poll. Its final recorded vote split 50.19% for “Heart of Ice” and 49.81% for “Over the Edge”. Those results come from that poll in 2002 and do not reflect current opinion or a representative sample. “Over the Edge” belongs to The New Batman Adventures, so the final vote compared an original-series episode with a follow-up one. In an earlier final-round matchup, both entries were recorded at 25%.
TVLine and ComicBook.com are the two editorial rankings cited here. Their placements are opinions, and neither publication’s list should be read as a consensus.
