If you want to watch anime online without paying for a subscription, start with Tubi for the broadest U.S.-friendly on-demand selection. These services are legitimate, but “free” does not mean identical to a paid anime library. Most use advertising, some are live-only, Hoopla requires a participating library card, and availability changes by country, title, language version, device, and licensing window. The list below is an editorial ranking for readers—especially U.S. readers—not an official industry ranking.

1. Tubi — best overall free anime website
Tubi is the strongest first stop for most U.S. viewers because it combines a free, ad-supported website with a sizable and regularly changing anime category. Its catalog has included recognizable titles such as Naruto, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Tougen Anki, Paprika, Ghost Stories (Dubbed), and Spider Riders.

Licensing partnerships have also expanded Tubi’s anime offering. A deal with Toei Animation, for example, brought One Piece episodes and related specials to the service in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. That does not mean every episode or every title will remain available: streaming rights and regional catalogs change.
Best for: on-demand browsing, mainstream franchises, dubbed anime, and subtitled anime.
Limitations: advertising interrupts playback, and the catalog varies by location. Check the current title page rather than relying on an old list or a fixed episode count.
2. Pluto TV — best for live anime channels
Pluto TV works more like free cable television than a traditional anime library. It offers scheduled, ad-supported channels alongside some on-demand programming. Its channel lineup has included Anime TV and Dragon Ball Z channels, with availability changing over time.

Rights-holder-supported franchise channels have also appeared on Pluto TV, including free 24/7 channels for Naruto and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. A Hunter x Hunter channel has previously been available through Freevee. These are useful examples of the kind of programming Pluto’s ecosystem can carry, not permanent guarantees.
Best for: channel surfing, background viewing, and people who would rather select a channel than choose individual episodes.
Limitations: a scheduled channel may be showing an episode you cannot select or restart. Channel names, schedules, and regional availability can change frequently.
3. RetroCrush — best for classic anime
RetroCrush is a focused service for older or “Golden Age” anime rather than a general-purpose home for every current show. It is especially useful for classic science fiction, action, drama, cult titles, older dubs, and historically important films and series. The service also promotes older titles receiving their first English-language release.
RetroCrush has both free and paid content, so do not assume that its entire catalog is available without payment. Open the specific title page and look for its current access status. The free selection and geographic availability can differ.
Best for: viewers who want to explore anime from earlier decades instead of chasing the newest seasonal releases.
Limitations: the free catalog is narrower than the full library, and some titles or language versions may be restricted by territory.
4. YouTube — best for official full-series releases and rotating episodes
YouTube can be an excellent free anime service when you use an official distributor’s channel rather than an arbitrary search result. VIZ has made hundreds of episodes and movies available through its official YouTube channel, including material from Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, and Vampire Knight. Toei Animation’s official regional channels have also published authorized clips and selected full episodes, including Digimon material.

Use the distributor’s channel page or verified playlist—not merely the first video returned by search. Before starting a long series, check whether the playlist is complete, whether the uploader is the rights holder or an established distributor, and whether the videos play in your country.

Best for: franchise-specific searches, older shows, selected complete series, clips, and viewers already using YouTube.
Limitations: uploads may be promotional, incomplete, dubbed or subtitled only in certain versions, and unavailable outside particular territories.
5. Anime-Planet — best for legal discovery and selected episodes
Anime-Planet combines anime discovery tools with a curated “Watch Anime Online” section. The site describes its video selection as legal and industry-supported through partnerships with the anime industry. Its recommendations, tags, watchlists, and tracking features are often as useful as the videos themselves.

It is not a replacement for a large premium anime catalog, and its available selection can change.
Best for: recommendations, watchlists, genre discovery, and sampling shows legally.
Limitations: only a limited selection is available to watch, and availability depends on licensing.
6. Hoopla — best if your public library participates
Hoopla uses a library-borrowing model rather than advertising. If your public library participates, you can create an account with a valid library card, email address, and any required PIN, then borrow eligible digital movies or shows. Anime availability and borrowing limits are determined by your library system.
Recommended Free Tools
This is one of the most useful options for viewers who want legitimate access without a streaming subscription. It is also the clearest case where free access depends on a local institution: a card from one library does not guarantee access through another.
Best for: viewers who have a participating library card and want to watch anime with a library card.
Limitations: not every library offers Hoopla, the catalog differs between libraries, and monthly borrowing limits may apply.
7. Plex — best as a supplemental free catalog
Plex offers free, ad-supported movies and television without requiring a paid subscription, and its anime category includes free anime movies and shows. It is worth checking when Tubi or RetroCrush does not have a particular film or when you want a less specialized catalog that works across several devices.
Plex is better viewed as a supplement than as an anime-first service. Its selection is smaller and less specialized than Tubi’s or RetroCrush’s, and the mix of titles changes.
Best for: anime films, less-mainstream titles, and viewers who already use Plex.

Limitations: selection and availability vary, and anime discovery is not as central to the service.
8. Crunchyroll Channel — best for a free 24/7 anime sampler
Crunchyroll Channel is a free, linear anime channel that does not require payment or an account. It has been offered on select platforms, including Roku, Amazon Freevee, LG Smart TVs, and Vizio Smart TVs. Example programming has included Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Moriarty the Patriot, PSYCHO-PASS, and Code Geass.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The crucial distinction is that Crunchyroll Channel is not free on-demand access to the full Crunchyroll library. It is scheduled programming: you watch what the channel is currently showing. The main Crunchyroll app generally requires a paid plan for its complete on-demand experience.
Best for: newcomers who want an always-on anime channel with no signup.
Limitations: no normal episode-by-episode control, changing schedules, select-platform availability, and no access to the full premium catalog.
9. Amazon Freevee — best for rotating rights-holder channels
Freevee can be useful for free, ad-supported anime channels distributed through Amazon’s streaming ecosystem. VIZ has documented free channels featuring Naruto, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, and Hunter x Hunter, while Crunchyroll lists Freevee among the platforms carrying Crunchyroll Channel.
Think of Freevee primarily as a place to find rotating FAST channels rather than as a permanent, on-demand anime library. Channel placement and programming can change, and a channel that is visible in one country or on one device may not appear elsewhere.
Best for: viewers already using Fire TV or Amazon’s free streaming environment.
Limitations: channel availability is temporary and largely scheduled rather than fully on demand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. BiliBili — best for selected free anime in supported Asian markets
BiliBili’s anime section includes a free filter and selected free titles. Its anime service is particularly relevant in Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia.
For readers in those territories, BiliBili can be a useful regional option. It is not a dependable U.S.-first recommendation: BiliBili states that content varies by region and may change at any time. Check the title page in your country before assuming that a series is available or free.
Best for: viewers in supported Asian markets looking for regional anime access.
Limitations: strong geographic restrictions, changing licensing, and a mix of free and premium content.

How to choose the right free anime website
- Want the broadest on-demand starting point? Try Tubi.
- Prefer a live channel? Try Pluto TV, Crunchyroll Channel, or a rotating Freevee anime channel.
- Want older or obscure anime? Check RetroCrush first, then Plex.
- Looking for one specific franchise? Search the official VIZ or Toei Animation YouTube channel and verify the playlist.
- Need recommendations as much as video? Use Anime-Planet.
- Have a library card? Search Hoopla and confirm whether your library participates.
- Live in Southeast Asia? Check BiliBili’s regional catalog.
How to watch these services on a television
Most of the services above are designed for web browsers as well as apps on supported televisions and streaming platforms, but compatibility is not identical. If you are comparing hardware, check whether your television already supports the services you want before buying anything. A streaming device for anime can be useful when an older TV lacks the required apps, but hardware is not necessary for the core free options if your browser or existing TV platform works.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also distinguish between an app’s availability and a particular title’s availability. A service may install successfully while a show remains blocked by regional rights, language-version restrictions, or a changed licensing agreement.
How to stay on the legal, safer side
Free anime should not require downloading a random player, installing an unknown browser extension, or entering payment details into a suspicious mirror site. Prefer recognizable ad-supported services, library platforms, and official distributor channels. YouTube search results are not automatically authorized simply because a video is easy to find.
Anime licensing is fragmented. A title may be legal on one service and unavailable in another country, or its dubbed and subtitled versions may have different rights. Before planning a binge, open the service’s own title page and check the current language options, episode list, country availability, and access label.
Can you watch the newest anime for free?
Sometimes, but you should not expect every new seasonal series or simulcast to be free. Free services tend to offer rotating catalogs, selected episodes, older programming, ad-supported channels, or promotional releases. Paid anime services generally provide more consistent access to current on-demand catalogs.
The practical free strategy is to combine services: use Tubi or RetroCrush for on-demand titles, Pluto TV or Crunchyroll Channel for scheduled viewing, official YouTube uploads for particular franchises, and Hoopla when your library offers the title.
What is the best free anime website overall?
For most U.S. readers, Tubi is the best overall starting point because it offers broad, ad-supported, on-demand browsing. Pluto TV is the better choice if you enjoy live channels, while RetroCrush is more suitable for classic anime. No single free service has every series, so checking two or three legitimate platforms is often faster than searching one catalog repeatedly.
