Tom Holland’s “do the right thing” comments were a 2024 update about the next Spider-Man film, not a new announcement. He said he wanted to return, but that the team needed to protect the series’ legacy and find a story that did not repeat what came before. Sony now identifies Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the fourth film featuring Holland as Spider-Man.
What Tom Holland said about Spider-Man 4
Holland made the remarks in an April 2024 interview with Deadline at the Sands International Film Festival. In an April 23 report, Entertainment Tonight quoted him saying: “I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films. I owe my life and career to Spider-Man. So the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more.”
His enthusiasm came with a condition: he did not want another film simply for its own sake. “We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect. The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing,” he said. The Independent also reported his line about having “a legacy to protect.”
What “do the right thing” meant
Holland was talking about the creative challenge of following Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third film in his Spider-Man series. His point was that the next story needed to justify continuing the series without repeating familiar ideas or diminishing what the previous film had achieved. The comments expressed a creative priority, not a plot description or a promise about the film’s direction.
#1 Best Overall
- Tom Holland stars as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in four unforgettable adventures, from his first days as a hero to an entirely new chapter in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
He also said this was the first time he had been involved in the creative process so early. “It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning,” he said. That distinction matters: he described being included earlier than before, while characterizing his role at that stage as observational.
How the Spider-Man 4 update developed
April 2024: Holland wanted to return
The April interview established that Holland was open to making more Spider-Man films, provided the team could find a story worthy of the series. It did not announce a release date or reveal the film’s story.

October 2024: he had read a draft
In an October 2024 update reported by GameSpot, Holland said he had read a draft with Zendaya and that it excited him: “I read [the Spider-Man 4 script] three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me.” He also said there were still things to work out. GameSpot reported at the time that Sony and Marvel had not set a date; that was the reported status in October 2024, not a current release-date update.
What Sony identifies now
Sony’s official Spider-Man: Brand New Day page identifies the film as the fourth Holland Spider-Man movie and lists a home-release date of October 6, 2026. That official information confirms the later film’s title and its place in Holland’s series; it does not turn his 2024 interview into a new statement.

Where to revisit the film Holland called special
Holland’s remarks specifically singled out Spider-Man: No Way Home as the third film and a high point the next story needed to respect. Sony lists the film in 4K UHD and Blu-ray formats on its official film page.
