At the Paris 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony on August 11, Tom Cruise rappelled from the Stade de France roof and rode away on a motorcycle carrying the Olympic flag. A separate video sequence then showed him traveling through Paris and skydiving to the Hollywood sign as part of the handover to Los Angeles, host of the 2028 Summer Games.
What Tom Cruise did at Stade de France
Cruise’s live appearance took place during the ceremony’s Los Angeles handover segment. He descended from the stadium roof to the field, took the Olympic flag and departed on a motorcycle. The flag handover linked the Paris Games to Los Angeles 2028, with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo passing it to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The Los Angeles Times’ contemporaneous account describes the stadium action and the broader transition to the next host city.

Was the skydiving stunt live?
No. Cruise’s descent and motorcycle departure happened at the stadium; the subsequent journey from Paris to the Hollywood sign was presented in a video segment. The video showed him moving through Paris, boarding a cargo plane and skydiving to the sign. The sequence connected the live handover to Los Angeles imagery, but it should not be described as one continuous live stunt or as proof that Cruise personally performed every off-site action. The available account does not provide a full breakdown of stunt credits.
Why the handover used Hollywood imagery
LA28 framed the segment as a celebration of Los Angeles entertainment, diversity, creativity and sport. Chairperson Casey Wasserman contrasted the cities’ landmarks, saying, “We don’t have an Eiffel Tower,” and adding, “We’ve got a Hollywood sign.” LA28’s announcement said the segment was produced by Fulwell 73 Productions, with Ben Winston as executive producer. Winston described its aim as bringing together stories of the city’s people, creativity, music and sport with “a little Hollywood magic.”

NBC commentator Mike Tirico called it “a Hollywood opening to the run-up to July 14, 2028.” The line captured the handover’s role: it introduced Los Angeles as the next Summer Games host through a performance built around its entertainment identity.

LA28 named NBC and Peacock as the original broadcasters for the August 11, 2024 ceremony. NBC Sports’ broadcast notes also record Tirico’s commentary. Those announcements confirm the original broadcast plan, not whether a replay is available now; current catalog availability may vary.
