Contemporary accounts characterized the relationship as lasting about three years: CBS/AP called it a three-year relationship, while TIME described Cruz as Cruise’s girlfriend of three years. The split was reported in March 2004
On March 26, CBS/AP reported that Cruise’s sister and publicist, Lee Anne DeVette, said the couple had “broke up at the end of January and it’s amicable.” That places the reported end of the relationship in late January, with news of the split reaching the public in March.

Cruise used a different shorthand later that year. In an August 2004 ABC interview, he referred to the breakup as occurring in March. That later phrasing differs from the January timing DeVette’s statement gave CBS/AP; the accounts can be distinguished as the reported end of the relationship and its public announcement, rather than treated as a single confirmed date. ABC’s August 2004 interview contains Cruise’s later reference.
Representatives described an amicable separation
CBS/AP reported that Cruz’s spokesman, Robert Garlock, said the actors “remain good friends.” TIME also reported that Cruise’s representative said they still spoke frequently. These were statements from representatives, not a detailed account from either actor of how the relationship ended.

Travel was cited as a strain, not a complete explanation
TIME attributed to Cruz’s spokesman the explanation that “their relationship was strained by the constant travel their filming schedules required.” This offers a reported factor, not proof that travel was the only reason for the breakup. CBS/AP also reported that Cruz’s spokesman said religion was not involved; that is the spokesman’s denial, not an independent account of the couple’s private motives.
