Todd and Julie Chrisley Pardoned by Trump: What the 2025 Order Changed—and What Remains Ongoing

President Trump’s full and unconditional pardons ended Todd and Julie Chrisley’s federal prison sentences—but did not exonerate them, erase their convictions, or automatically cancel restitution. Here is the timeline and the status of their separate malpractice lawsuit.

President Donald Trump granted Todd and Julie Chrisley separate full and unconditional pardons on May 28, 2025. The pardons ended their federal prison sentences, and news reports said both were released in May. They did not amount to a judicial exoneration, overturn the federal convictions, or automatically erase the official records.

The phrase “ongoing case” needs clarification. The Chrisleys’ federal criminal case produced convictions, prison sentences, an appellate ruling, and a limited remand involving Julie’s sentence. The principal post-pardon legal matter is a separate civil malpractice lawsuit filed by the Chrisleys against their former defense attorney and his law firm.

What happened to Todd and Julie Chrisley?

A federal jury in Atlanta convicted Todd and Julie Chrisley in June 2022 on charges involving bank fraud, tax-related offenses, and related conspiracies.

The Eleventh Circuit later described two central parts of the government’s case. Prosecutors said the Chrisleys concealed Todd’s income from the Internal Revenue Service and submitted fabricated financial documents to obtain or renew bank loans and lines of credit. Those convictions remained in place after the couple’s appeal.

Person Original sentence Restitution listed in official records
Todd Chrisley 144 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release $17,270,741.57
Julie Chrisley 84 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release $4,740,645.04

Todd was sentenced on November 21, 2022. Julie’s sentence was later amended on September 25, 2024, according to the Department of Justice clemency table. The figures above are the original sentencing and restitution information identified in the official records; they should not be read as proof that every financial obligation was later canceled.

What did the Eleventh Circuit decide?

On June 21, 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit upheld the Chrisleys’ convictions but vacated Julie’s sentence and sent that part of the case back to the district court.

The issue was narrow but important. The sentencing court had included losses from 2006 in calculating Julie’s punishment, restitution, and related financial consequences. The appeals court found that the district court had not adequately explained why Julie should be held responsible for those losses or established that she participated in the conspiracy during that period.

That ruling was not an acquittal. The Eleventh Circuit rejected the Chrisleys’ principal challenges to their convictions. It ordered additional factual findings and possible recalculation of Julie’s loss amount, restitution, and forfeiture, while leaving the guilty verdicts intact.

What exactly did President Trump pardon?

The Department of Justice’s official clemency records show separate executive grants dated May 28, 2025. Each document says that President Trump granted a “full and unconditional pardon” under Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution.

Because the Chrisleys were convicted in federal court in the Northern District of Georgia, a presidential pardon was the relevant form of executive clemency. In general terms, a presidential pardon forgives a federal offense. It does not function like a trial verdict finding that the recipient never committed the offense.

DOJ’s pardon guidance expressly says that a pardon does not signify innocence. That distinction matters in this case because the Eleventh Circuit had already left the convictions standing. The pardon changed the legal consequences of those convictions; it did not transform the appellate decision into an acquittal.

Pardon versus exoneration versus expungement

These terms describe different legal outcomes:

  • Pardon: An executive act of forgiveness for a federal offense. It may relieve some civil disabilities associated with the conviction and can help with consequences involving employment, licensing, or bonding, but it is not a judicial finding of innocence.
  • Exoneration: A conclusion—usually through a court ruling or other formal process—that a person was wrongfully convicted or should not be held responsible. The Chrisley pardons were not exonerations.
  • Expungement: The removal, sealing, or destruction of records under an applicable legal process. A presidential pardon does not automatically expunge the court or executive records concerning a conviction or the underlying offense.

The Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel has concluded that a presidential pardon does not automatically erase judicial or executive records. Accordingly, it would be inaccurate to say that Trump “overturned” the Chrisleys’ convictions, that the convictions were legally proven false, or that their records disappeared.

Did the pardons cancel restitution?

The available official records do not establish that the pardons separately remitted every restitution or forfeiture obligation.

That point requires care because a pardon is different from a commutation or a specific remission of fines or restitution. The DOJ clemency table and the pardon-related records identify the original restitution obligations, but the materials reviewed for this article do not show an authoritative order saying that all restitution or forfeiture was canceled.

The safest conclusion is therefore limited: the pardons ended the federal prison consequences reported for Todd and Julie, but readers should not assume that every financial obligation vanished unless a later court or executive record specifically says so.

Why is the Chrisley legal story still active?

In June 2026, Todd and Julie Chrisley filed a separate federal civil lawsuit against former defense attorney Christopher Anulewicz and his firm, Balch & Bingham.

The complaint alleges that defense errors—including an allegedly late effort to suppress evidence—contributed to the convictions, imprisonment, reputational harm, and financial losses. The Chrisleys seek a jury trial and more than $25 million in compensatory damages, along with legal costs and attorney fees.

Those claims are allegations in a civil complaint, not established findings. The lawsuit does not itself reopen the federal criminal case, reverse the convictions, or establish that the defense attorney or law firm caused the outcome alleged by the Chrisleys. Any account of the case should distinguish what the complaint says from facts determined by a court and should include the defendants’ response when one is available.

Todd and Julie Chrisley became widely known through the reality series Chrisley Knows Best. That entertainment history explains the public interest in the pardon, but it is separate from the evidence, rulings, and legal effect of the federal case.

The key wording is deliberate: Trump pardoned the Chrisleys; he did not judicially exonerate them or automatically expunge their records. The federal convictions remained part of the official record, while the separate malpractice claims remained to be litigated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did President Trump overturn Todd and Julie Chrisley’s convictions?

No. Trump granted each Chrisley a full and unconditional presidential pardon on May 28, 2025. The pardon changed the consequences of the federal convictions but was not an acquittal, appellate reversal, or finding that the convictions were false.

Did the Chrisley pardon erase their criminal records?

No. A presidential pardon does not automatically expunge judicial or executive records concerning the conviction or underlying offense.

Did the pardon cancel the Chrisleys’ restitution?

The official records reviewed for this article do not establish that all restitution or forfeiture was remitted. A pardon is distinct from a specific remission of financial obligations, so restitution should not be described as canceled without a later authoritative order.

What is the Chrisleys’ ongoing lawsuit about?

In June 2026, Todd and Julie Chrisley sued former defense attorney Christopher Anulewicz and Balch & Bingham in federal court. Their complaint alleges professional errors contributed to the criminal-case outcome and seeks more than $25 million. Those allegations have not been established by a court, and the civil suit does not itself reverse the convictions.

The Bottom Line

Trump’s May 28, 2025 pardons ended Todd and Julie Chrisley’s federal prison sentences, but they were not exonerations and did not automatically erase the convictions or official records. The Eleventh Circuit had upheld the convictions while ordering a limited review of Julie’s sentence. The later malpractice lawsuit against former defense counsel is a separate civil matter, and its allegations remain unproven.
