You play Momo, a first-year cat wizard, drawing symbols over invading ghosts to protect her school. Its wizard-school atmosphere invites Harry Potter comparisons, but Google presents Magic Cat Academy as its own original setting—not an official Harry Potter game.
What was Google’s Halloween 2016 Doodle?
Magic Cat Academy is a short, spell-casting arcade game built into Google’s Halloween 2016 Doodle. The story follows Momo, a feline student whose school is overrun by ghosts. Her objective is to drive them away, rescue her classmates and restore order.
Google’s Doodle archive identifies five areas of the academy: the library, cafeteria, classroom, gym and rooftop. The locations provide the game’s progression rather than functioning as a free-roaming world.
How do you play Magic Cat Academy?
Each ghost displays a symbol above its head. Draw that symbol on the screen before the ghost reaches Momo. A correct, timely gesture casts the spell and removes the threat; the challenge comes from recognizing and reproducing symbols quickly as more ghosts appear.

|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen | Swipe or draw the symbol directly on the display. | BetaNews described touchscreen play as convenient. |
| Mouse | Use the pointer to draw the same symbol. | Mouse input is also supported, so a touchscreen is not required. |
The game does not require a physical wand. Google’s archive describes symbol drawing as the core interaction, while contemporary coverage confirms that either touchscreen or mouse controls can be used.
Why does it look like Harry Potter?
The comparison comes from the recognizable ingredients: a school of magic, a student learning spells, ghosts and wand-like gestures. Google’s own descriptions, however, call the setting Magic Cat Academy and do not identify it as part of the Harry Potter franchise.

“With a swipe of your paw (or should I say wave of your wand), you can help turn these Halloween tricks into a real treat. But be warned, your spell casting must be quick and precise. To send these ghouls into a tailspin, you must draw the symbols that appear above the ghosts’ heads on your screen. Wow! Meow!”

During development, the team reportedly considered a story about a magic cat whose soup raised the dead. Google says that idea felt too abstract for Halloween, so the concept changed to a wizard-school setting that made the action easier to understand.
What should you expect from the game?
- Format: a compact, symbol-drawing Doodle game rather than a full-length role-playing game.
- Goal: repel ghosts and protect Momo’s fellow students.
- Progression: five named academy locations, ending at the rooftop.
- Equipment: a browser device with a touchscreen or mouse; a stylus is optional, not a requirement.
- Franchise status: an original Google creation, with Harry Potter resemblance limited to the broad wizard-school theme.
Why the Doodle still gets remembered
Magic Cat Academy turns a familiar Halloween premise into an interaction that is immediately readable: see a symbol, copy it, and watch the spell work. Momo’s cat-based design and the sequence of school locations give the one-session game a distinct identity, even when its imagery recalls better-known wizard fiction.
