RMS Titanic Inc.’s 2024 survey documented a 15-foot section of the wreck’s bow railing fallen onto the seabed and located the bronze Diana of Versailles statuette in the debris field. The expedition photographed Diana; its account does not say the team recovered either the statuette or the railing. The “treasure” was a rediscovered artifact, not a prize brought to the surface.
What did the latest Titanic dive find?
The latest expedition covered here is RMS Titanic Inc.’s 2024 survey. The company says its team spent 13 days surveying the debris field before reaching the bow on July 29. There, it observed that a 15-foot section of the port-side railing was missing. Multibeam imagery made with partner 3D at Depth showed the section lying on the seabed below as a single piece. RMS Titanic Inc.’s Expedition 2024 account reports that observation and mapping; it does not report raising the railing.
The expedition also located Diana of Versailles, a bronze statuette about two feet tall associated with Titanic’s First Class Lounge. The team photographed the statue in the debris field and released new images. The account does not say Diana was recovered.
Why the railing loss matters—and what it cannot prove
A fallen section is a visible example of change at the wreck, but one documented loss does not establish a numerical rate of deterioration or predict when the site will disappear. RMS Titanic Inc. calls the decay ongoing and inevitable, saying: “This loss is a stark reminder of Titanic’s ongoing and inevitable decay.” The company does not provide a measured rate of structural loss in the pages describing the 2024 findings.

The wreck comprises separate bow and stern sections surrounded by a debris field. Its deterioration is not driven by one process alone. RMS Titanic Inc.’s wreck-site overview discusses biological, chemical and physical mechanisms, including rusticles associated with Halomonas titanicae, microbial decomposition of organic matter and galvanic corrosion. NOAA likewise describes biological, chemical and physical effects, including rusticle growth, electrolysis and contact by underwater vehicles. Those mechanisms provide context for ongoing change; they do not quantify how quickly the railing or any other structure is being lost.
The 2024 mission was a survey, not a recovery expedition
Purpose matters when interpreting what a Titanic expedition found. RMS Titanic Inc. says the 2024 team used two unmanned, surface-piloted remotely operated vehicles to document the site. The account reports hundreds of hours at the wreck and more than two million photographs captured. That count does not establish that the full image set or all technical data are publicly available.

The company’s earlier work included artifact-recovery expeditions using crewed submersibles such as Nautile, MIR and Remora 6000. Its conservation overview lists seven recovery expeditions and more than 5,500 recovered artifacts. Recovered objects are stabilized, cleaned, desalinated and conserved, with treatment depending on the material. The company also describes exhibitions as a way for the public to see artifacts.
| Activity | What it does | What the 2024 account reports |
|---|---|---|
| Survey and documentation | Records the wreck and debris field through imaging and mapping. | Two unmanned ROVs, more than two million photographs captured, and multibeam imagery used to document the fallen railing. |
| Artifact recovery | Raises objects for stabilization and conservation. | The account reports locating and photographing Diana, not recovering her or the railing. |
Recovery and access involve separate rules
Documentation, recovery and later decisions about recovered collections are distinct matters. NOAA materials describe court conditions for collections from earlier expeditions and say recovery must comply with applicable law and permitting. Those U.S. requirements should not be treated as rules that automatically govern every expedition elsewhere.

The UK government’s Titanic wreck-site licensing guidance says findings from authorized projects must be made publicly accessible through archive deposit and noncommercial reuse arrangements. The applicable requirements depend on jurisdiction and authorization.
A separate dispute concerns objects recovered decades earlier, not the 2024 survey. The Associated Press reported a March 2026 proposal to auction 100 lots of artifacts removed in 1987, followed in June 2026 by the unsealing of documents showing U.S. and NOAA opposition to the sale. Because that matter can change, its current status should be checked against the court record. It does not alter what the 2024 expedition reported finding. The AP timeline covers the separate sale dispute.
