The appearance was a one-off ceremony performance, not an announcement of a reunion tour or a permanent return.

The arrangement gave the members distinct roles: Buck played mandolin, Mills played 12-string acoustic guitar, Berry played congas and shaker, and Stipe sang.
Was this R.E.M.’s first performance together since 2007?
It was the first public performance of the four members performing together as R.E.M. since 2007, according to contemporaneous coverage. The wording needs a distinction: all four had appeared at an Athens tribute show in February 2024, but it was not a performance of R.E.M. as a reunited quartet. Buck, Mills, and Berry played with Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy; Stipe attended but did not sing. SPIN’s account of the June performance notes that earlier tribute appearance.

Who are R.E.M.’s original members?
The founding lineup was singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. The band played its first show in Athens, Georgia, on April 5, 1980, and released 15 albums before ending in 2011, according to Universal Music Publishing Group’s band biography.
Berry left the band in 1997 after suffering a brain aneurysm. Stipe, Buck, and Mills continued as R.E.M. until the group decided to end in 2011; Berry’s appearance in 2024 should not be read as a return to regular touring.

Did the performance mean R.E.M. had reunited permanently?
No permanent reunion or tour was announced. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that the band had no plans to reform permanently, while SPIN noted that R.E.M. had repeatedly declined reunion offers. The June 13 appearance was a single performance connected to the Hall of Fame induction, not evidence of a continuing comeback.
What did Michael Stipe say about the band?
After the award presentation, Stipe reflected on the group’s songwriting and lasting friendship: “Writing songs and having a catalog of work that we’re all proud of, that is out there for the whole world for the rest of time, is hands down the most important aspect of what we did as a band.” He added that remaining friends—and “dear friends” and “friends for life”—came second. Georgia Public Broadcasting recorded his remarks.
