To stream gameplay on YouTube, first choose between broadcasting directly from a supported console or sending your gameplay through an encoder. Use a console’s built-in streaming for a simpler setup; choose an encoder when you need overlays, external audio or video, or more control over the production. Before going live, verify that your channel is eligible, set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, rehearse in YouTube’s preview, and keep a local recording if the replay matters.
How do I stream gameplay on YouTube?
- Check channel eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time livestreaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day of your event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Choose a broadcast route. Use your console’s built-in broadcast feature if it meets your needs, or use a software or hardware encoder for greater production control. YouTube describes both direct console streaming and encoder streaming in its live-streaming setup guidance.
- Set up the event in YouTube Studio. For an encoder stream, create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send video to your channel. Do not reveal it in a screen share or public recording.
- Configure video and audio. Select a resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can sustain, then set a recommended bitrate for that mode and codec. Use the encoder settings below as a starting point, not a guarantee that your particular setup will be stable.
- Rehearse and inspect the preview. Test with gameplay motion and audio similar to the planned stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live.
- Keep a local recording when needed. Enable recording in your capture or encoder setup if you need a dependable replay copy; YouTube’s archive behavior has a time limit described below.
Can I stream from my console, or should I use an encoder?
YouTube says modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly; follow the instructions for your specific console. Direct broadcasting is a straightforward route when the console’s built-in options provide the controls you need. An encoder is more suitable when you want to combine gameplay with overlays, an external microphone, a camera, or other audio/video hardware.
| Route | Best fit | Production control | Extra computer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console direct broadcast | A simpler stream using a console’s built-in features | Depends on the console’s broadcast options | Not necessarily; follow the console maker’s instructions |
| Software or hardware encoder | Gameplay with overlays, external audio/video, or a more managed production | More suitable for combining and managing sources | A software encoder uses a computer; a hardware encoder is a separate device |
YouTube’s guidance does not benchmark encoder performance or name one universally best option. An external microphone, webcam, and headphones are common optional equipment, but YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Prioritize clear commentary and a stable connection over buying gear before you know what your setup needs. See YouTube’s encoder setup and equipment guidance.
What bitrate should I use for 1080p 60fps?
Use the recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these video bitrates; they are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. The recommendations for 720p and 1080p at 30 or 60 fps are:
#1 Best Overall

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K, 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. A stable 1080p60 or 720p60 stream can be a sensible starting target if your computer and upload connection can sustain it; drop resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if they cannot.
Which encoder settings matter?
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS when available. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS.
Encoder menus differ, so look for these settings in your encoder’s streaming or output configuration. For RTMPS security and protocol details, see YouTube’s encoder guidance and its RTMPS explanation.

How much upload speed do I need to stream?
Measure upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. As a simple calculation, multiply the bitrate you plan to send by 1.2: for a 17 Mbps video stream, that means at least 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity under the test conditions. That is a planning floor, not a guarantee; other household or office traffic can reduce what is available to the stream.
If you send a backup stream as well, add the primary and backup bitrates first, then include the 20% headroom. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance is at its live-streaming tips page.

How should I rehearse and monitor the stream?
Test under conditions that resemble the real broadcast: similar gameplay movement, audio sources, encoder settings, and network use. YouTube advises configuring an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Use the Live Control Room preview to catch problems before starting the stream, and continue watching stream health during the broadcast.
- Confirm the correct game, microphone, and any camera or overlays appear in the preview.
- Listen for commentary that is too quiet, distorted, or missing; check game audio separately.
- Verify that the local recording file is being created and growing if you need a backup.
- For a complex setup with a backup encoder, test failover before the event. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection to check that playback moves to the backup.

Should I use low latency, and is RTMPS secure?
Choose latency for the kind of stream
YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and display. Lower latency can make audience interaction quicker, but may increase playback buffering. Choose based on whether fast chat interaction or more resilient playback matters more for your stream; no setting can promise a buffer-free experience for every viewer.
Use RTMPS when available
RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection, encrypting the stream in transit to YouTube. It is YouTube’s recommended option when available. YouTube explains RTMPS here.

When HLS is relevant
HLS is available for supported streaming setups, but sends video in segments and therefore has higher latency; YouTube says ultra-low latency is unavailable when HLS is selected. Most gameplay streams can follow YouTube’s basic encoder recommendations without choosing HLS or configuring HDR. Check the current encoder guidance for compatibility with your setup.
Will YouTube save my livestream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, make a local recording and check that the archive is available after the broadcast; do not rely on an automatic archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
What rights should I check before streaming gameplay?
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and to follow its Community Guidelines. Do not assume that music in a game, a background playlist, or another person’s voice is automatically cleared for both the live stream and its archived replay. Check the permissions that apply to the material you plan to include. YouTube’s requirements are in its Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
Common gameplay streaming problems and fixes
- Livestreaming is not available: Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The stream drops or buffers: Compare actual available upload capacity with the total outgoing bitrate, including any backup stream. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and reduce bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain them.
- The encoder does not connect: Confirm that its stream URL and key match the event in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Viewers report delay or buffering: Review the latency choice. Lower latency can speed up interaction but may increase buffering; HLS has higher latency and does not support ultra-low-latency mode.
- The archive is missing: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that streams longer than that may not be captured; use a local recording when a replay is important.
- Commentary or game audio is absent or unclear: Test each audio source separately in rehearsal, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before and during the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
