Chris Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in the 2009 case involving Rihanna. Other events often grouped into accounts of his history have different legal statuses: some were allegations, a civil settlement, a release without charge, or a dismissed lawsuit. This timeline separates those outcomes and identifies a later UK violence case involving a male complainant, which is not part of the women-focused count.
Status is current through October 8, 2026. The events below are not all equivalent: a guilty plea, a restraining order, an allegation and a civil case each mean different things.

Timeline
June 2008 — Brown and Rihanna publicly acknowledge their relationship
The Washington Post reported that Brown announced he and Rihanna were dating after they had been seen together for months. This is relationship context, not evidence of violence. (The Washington Post, June 29, 2012.)
February 8, 2009 — Rihanna assault and Brown’s arrest
The Washington Post dates the assault and Brown’s surrender to police to February 8. Los Angeles Times reporting on court papers said Brown was charged with felony assault and criminal threats. The physical attack and injuries described in that coverage came from a police affidavit; they should be understood as the affidavit’s account, not as the newspaper’s eyewitness reporting. (The Washington Post, June 29, 2012; Los Angeles Times, March 6, 2009.)

August 2009 — A probation report describes two earlier episodes
The Guardian reported that a probation officer’s report described two incidents that had not been reported to authorities. In an argument in Europe about three months before the February assault, Rihanna reportedly slapped Brown and he pushed her into a wall. In a January 2009 argument in Barbados, Brown reportedly broke the two front windows of their vehicle. The Guardian said neither person was injured in these episodes. These details are accounts attributed to the probation report, not separate criminal findings. (The Guardian, August 27, 2009.)
June and August 2009 — Guilty plea and sentence in the Rihanna case
Brown pleaded guilty to one felony assault count under a plea agreement. In August, he was sentenced to five years’ probation and 180 days of community labor, required to complete a one-year domestic-violence course, and made subject to a stay-away order, according to The Guardian. The guilty plea is the central adjudicated event in this women-focused chronology. (The Guardian, August 27, 2009.)

February 2011 — Rihanna’s protective order is relaxed
The Washington Post reported that the close-contact order was lifted in February 2011. Us Weekly described the order as relaxed to allow contact under a lower level of restriction. Those accounts indicate a change in the order’s terms; they do not establish that every restriction ended. (The Washington Post, June 29, 2012; Us Weekly, updated June 20, 2025.)
2012–2013 — Brief reconciliation
Us Weekly’s timeline says Brown and Rihanna briefly reconciled in 2012 and ended the relationship again in 2013. This is relationship context, not evidence about the 2009 assault. (Us Weekly, updated June 20, 2025.)

2017 — Karrueche Tran seeks a restraining order
Tran alleged physical abuse and threats when seeking a restraining order. Us Weekly reported that the order was later extended for five years and that Brown denied her allegations. The order and the reported allegations should not be presented as a criminal conviction or as a criminal court finding that the allegations were proven. (Us Weekly, updated June 20, 2025.)
2018–2022 — Sexual-assault allegations lead to different legal outcomes
- 2018 civil case: Us Weekly summarized a civil lawsuit alleging sexual battery and assault that settled out of court in 2020. A settlement is not, by itself, a court finding that the allegations were proven.
- 2019 Paris case: Brown was arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape, then released without charge, according to Us Weekly.
- 2022 civil case: Us Weekly reported that a judge dismissed a sexual-assault lawsuit in 2022. A dismissal is distinct from a guilty plea or a finding of guilt.
(Us Weekly, updated June 20, 2025.)
October 2024–January 2025 — Documentary and defamation lawsuit
After the 2024 documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence, Brown filed a $500 million defamation lawsuit in January 2025 against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment. Us Weekly reported that he alleged the documentary included false sexual-assault allegations. That filing states Brown’s claim; it does not establish that the allegations or the documentary were false. The available account does not establish a later disposition of the lawsuit. (Us Weekly, updated June 20, 2025.)

A later violence case involved a male complainant
February 19, 2023 — Reported London nightclub incident
The Metropolitan Police said the reported assault took place at a London venue on February 19, 2023. The complainant was music producer Abraham Diaw, a man, so this incident does not belong in a count of violence toward women.
May 2025–July 2026 — Charge, affray plea and scheduled sentencing
The Metropolitan Police said Brown was charged in May 2025 with grievous bodily harm with intent and received bail on May 21. On July 24, 2026, Brown pleaded guilty to affray, according to the Crown Prosecution Service and the Associated Press. The CPS said sentencing was scheduled for October 26, 2026. Its account distinguishes that plea from the more serious charges, which were dropped. CPS London South Senior Crown Prosecutor Claire Campbell described the incident as “a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice.” That is the prosecutor’s characterization; the plea reported by the CPS was to affray. (Metropolitan Police Service, May 15, 2025; Crown Prosecution Service and Associated Press, July 24, 2026.)
