Tim Allen has shown an eclectic mix of hot rods, American classics, customs and performance cars—but the available public record does not verify a complete, current 14-car inventory. Two GQ garage videos from 2013 identify ten distinct vehicles, while a 2018 interview adds context without supplying a count. Here’s what Allen actually showed or discussed, with the dates and caveats intact.
What is known about the size of Tim Allen’s collection?
There is no verified current count in the cited material. In a 2018 Car and Driver interview, Allen was asked how many cars he owned and replied, “More than I need.” He did not give a number. The two GQ videos from 2013 provide a record of cars featured in those tours, not a complete inventory or proof of present-day ownership. Car and Driver’s 2018 interview
Allen described his collection in the July 2013 GQ video as “kind of an eclectic collection” and said, “I like authentic American motors.” The vehicles he showed were not exclusively American makes, and the variety is part of what makes the tour notable. GQ’s July 2013 garage tour

1965 Shelby Cobra S/C
Allen showed a 1965 Shelby Cobra S/C with a 289-cubic-inch engine and Weber carburetors. The Cobra is among the clearest examples of the muscular American performance cars that fit his stated enthusiasm for American motors.

1933 Ford Roadster
Allen connected the 1933 Ford Roadster to Home Improvement, explaining that it was built and rebuilt repeatedly to preserve continuity on the show. Its backstory makes it more than a period hot rod: it also has a direct link to his television work.
409 bubble top
The tour included a bubble-top car with a 409 engine and a four-speed transmission. GQ’s transcript identifies the engine and transmission, but does not establish a make or model; calling it a more specific car would go beyond the available identification.

Porsche Carrera GT
The Porsche Carrera GT brought a modern supercar into a collection otherwise rich in older and modified machinery. The GQ tour names the car but does not state its model year or additional specifications.

Two more vehicles from GQ’s August 2013 video
Volkswagen Beetle
In a separate video, GQ described Allen’s Volkswagen Beetle as having a 200-horsepower engine. That figure is the specification stated for the Beetle in the 2013 video, not a measurement of the collection as a whole. GQ’s August 2013 video
Studebaker Sleeper Cab
Allen also discussed a Studebaker Sleeper Cab, which he said he rebuilt after finding it in a magazine. GQ’s description says the truck doubled as a campground for his young daughter. The source documents the story as part of that 2013 appearance, not the vehicle’s current status.
Quick Recap
What the tours do—and do not—confirm
- The two GQ videos identify ten distinct vehicles: eight in July and two in August 2013.
- The list includes original models, modified vehicles and custom combinations; not every car was presented as a stock production model.
- Allen’s 2018 answer confirms only that he owned “more than” he needed at that time; it does not validate a total of 14.
- The cited sources do not provide a complete, current inventory, so the ten vehicles should be treated as documented public appearances rather than a definitive garage count.
