These discoveries range from a schooner found run aground with no crew to shipwrecks rediscovered decades later, a hidden wartime submarine and a network beneath an Italian city. “Abandoned” does not mean the same thing in every case: some things were left behind, while others were lost and later found. Their settings may be strange, but the evidence—not the setting—determines what can be said about them.

Ships and wrecks found after being lost

1. Carroll A. Deering: a schooner run aground without its crew

The five-masted schooner Carroll A. Deering was built in 1919 and found wrecked near North Carolina’s Outer Banks on January 31, 1921. The National Park Service describes it as run aground and abandoned. Reports from the scene said the decks were awash, the sails set and the lifeboats missing. Those observations help explain why the ship became a real-life mystery, but they do not establish what happened to the crew or prove a particular explanation. National Park Service account.

2. USS Monitor: a famous wreck found after decades of searching

The Civil War ironclad USS Monitor sank off Cape Hatteras in 1862. Its remains were not discovered until 1973, after searches had continued for years; the Navy had abandoned its claims in 1953. A Duke University Marine Laboratory team proposed using geological survey equipment to locate a known wreck, selected Monitor as the target, and identified the site. This is a rediscovery of a wreck, not an intact ship found abandoned. NOAA’s account of Monitor’s discovery.

3. Correio da Azia: a Portuguese vessel and a mass of coins

The Portuguese despatch vessel Correio da Azia was lost in 1816 and discovered in 2004 during a survey collaboration involving the Western Australian Museum and Fugro. The museum says its team recovered approximately 900 silver coins, concreted together. The coins make the find tangible, but they are part of an underwater wreck site rather than a cache found in isolation. Western Australian Museum wreck record.

4. Vergulde Draeck: evidence of a possible survivors’ camp

After the Dutch ship Vergulde Draeck wrecked off Western Australia in 1656, the fate and movements of its survivors became part of the story. Artifact analysis led to further investigation of an associated site in early 2025. The Western Australian Museum reports that excavations produced additional evidence supporting the theory that the site was likely a seventeenth-century survivors’ camp. Finds included personal and survival objects, more than 8,000 Dutch clay bricks and more than 8,500 silver coins, according to the museum. The camp identification remains qualified as likely, not certain. Western Australian Museum account.

5. HMS Erebus and HMS Terror: Franklin expedition ships under Arctic waters

HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were lost during the Franklin expedition, which sought a route through the Canadian Arctic. Parks Canada, working with Inuit communities, discovered Erebus in 2014 and Terror in 2016, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. These were not simply vessels left in odd places: their wrecks are linked to a disastrous expedition, and their rediscovery followed extensive searches informed by historical knowledge and Inuit expertise. 6. RI 2394: a possible link to Lord Sandwich and Endeavour

Underwater site RI 2394 has been proposed as a possible remnant of Lord Sandwich, the vessel formerly known as Endeavour. The Australian National Maritime Museum describes archaeological observations including ballast, cannons, a lead scupper and exposed hull components. It presents the identification cautiously. The distinction matters: evidence from a wreck can support a hypothesis without making the ship’s identity definitive. Australian National Maritime Museum on RI 2394.

7. Florida Keys Mystery Wreck: a ship stripped before it was left

NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary describes a colonial ship that grounded on a shallow reef. Its crew removed cargo and equipment before abandoning it; archaeologists later documented the site and sampled timbers. The account supports a story of a wreck deliberately stripped before its final loss, but it does not, by itself, settle the vessel’s identity. Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary account.

Objects and vessels whose stories are clearer

8. U-505: a submarine abandoned during a wartime capture

On June 4, 1944, U.S. forces discovered the German submarine U-505 on the surface. Its crew tried unsuccessfully to scuttle the boat, then abandoned ship; a U.S. boarding party captured the submarine and its equipment. Unlike several mysteries on this list, the episode is a documented wartime capture, not an unexplained disappearance. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command.

Unexpected finds in caves and beneath familiar places

9. Oregon sea-cave timbers: wood in a cave, not necessarily a shipwreck

Archaeologists investigated timbers found in sea caves on the Oregon coast in 2020. National Geographic reports that they assessed the wood as a secondary deposit, possibly washed into the caves by the 1700 tsunami, rather than evidence of a shipwreck inside. Lab work identified tropical hardwood, and radiocarbon dating indicated the tree was felled around 1650. The location where an object turns up is not always where it originated or how it entered the archaeological record. National Geographic’s report on the Oregon timbers.

10. Burlington bunker: a concealed government refuge under Corsham

Beneath Corsham, England, an underground complex known as Burlington was built in the 1950s using existing tunnels and quarries. HISTORY describes it as a government refuge that remained partially operational until 2004, when it was decommissioned and declassified. This is a hidden piece of Cold War infrastructure, not a lost object. The account is a general history feature, so its details should be understood as HISTORY’s description rather than a definitive heritage inventory. HISTORY on Burlington bunker.

11. Orvieto’s underground network: rooms with many different lives

Under the Italian city of Orvieto lies a layered network of tunnels, grottoes and galleries. HISTORY reports more than 1,200 interconnected spaces, used across generations for purposes including wells, storage and sanctuaries. The remarkable feature is the accumulation of spaces beneath a city, not a single abandoned complex that was entirely unknown. HISTORY’s account of Orvieto’s underground spaces.

What makes these discoveries mysterious?

The cases are compelling for different reasons. A crewless ship invites questions about its final voyage; a wreck rediscovered after decades raises the challenge of locating and identifying it; a hidden bunker suggests how governments planned for crisis. But a strange setting is not itself an explanation. The Oregon timbers, for example, may have been carried into a cave by a tsunami, while RI 2394 remains a proposed identification rather than a confirmed famous ship.

Archaeologists also rely on context, not just striking objects. The National Park Service notes that recording an artifact’s location in the landscape can help determine whether it belongs to a larger site. Underwater discoveries bring further constraints: access is difficult, fragile objects require conservation, and moving finds can risk damaging the evidence. Leave protected sites undisturbed and check with the relevant local authority before visiting or handling anything; rules vary by place. National Park Service on archaeological context; NOAA on underwater preservation challenges.
