TikTok Notes was retired on May 8, 2025. The standalone photo-and-text app was not replaced by a documented, automatic migration. Instead, TikTok told Notes users to download their data and encouraged them to continue sharing photos on Lemon8, ByteDance’s separate lifestyle-focused platform.
The decision represents a consolidation of ByteDance’s photo-sharing products—not an end to photo posts on TikTok and not a confirmed consequence of the U.S. TikTok regulatory dispute.
What TikTok Notes was
TikTok Notes was a standalone service for publishing photographs, captions and related commentary rather than short-form videos. It was tested in selected markets, including Canada, Australia and Vietnam, rather than launched universally. TikTok’s support documentation described account linking, eligible TikTok photo posts appearing on Notes, and separate Notes profile, privacy, following and analytics controls.

That made Notes an Instagram-style experiment inside the wider TikTok ecosystem, but it remained distinct from TikTok’s own photo-posting tools.

When did TikTok Notes shut down?
The reported retirement date was Thursday, May 8, 2025. Users received notices in late March and early April and were advised to save their information before the service disappeared. Headlines written at the time said Notes “is shutting down”; for readers today, the accurate wording is that it shut down on May 8, 2025.
- 2024: TikTok tested Notes in selected countries.
- November 2024: TikTok announced deeper account and photo-sharing integration with Lemon8.
- March–April 2025: Notes users were notified about the retirement and directed toward Lemon8.
- May 8, 2025: Notes was retired.
Contemporaneous reports from TechCrunch, Fast Company and Social Media Today reported the same final date.
Why did ByteDance close Notes?
TikTok did not publish a specific user-count, financial or technical reason. Its stated explanation was that feedback from Notes would help improve Lemon8, which it described as a similar photo destination with more features.

The most defensible interpretation is product consolidation. Notes and Lemon8 served overlapping photo-first audiences, while Lemon8 already had a clearer lifestyle identity and an established platform. TechCrunch cited an estimate of about 12.5 million global monthly active Lemon8 users in December 2024; no comparable official Notes figure was identified. That difference may have made maintaining two similar services inefficient, but “Notes failed because of low adoption” remains analysis, not a confirmed ByteDance explanation.
TikTok had already been moving in this direction. In a November 2024 announcement, it described linking TikTok and Lemon8 accounts and enabling photo-content sharing between the services. Closing Notes therefore looks like choosing one primary photo-sharing destination rather than abandoning the category.
What is Lemon8?
Lemon8 is a ByteDance-owned lifestyle and photo-sharing platform often compared with Instagram and Pinterest. It supports photo collections, slideshows, captions, discovery feeds, filters, stickers, effects and text templates. TikTok’s description emphasizes categories such as beauty, fashion, travel and other lifestyle subjects.

Lemon8 launched in Japan in 2020 and later expanded into the United States and Southeast Asia. Its tools and availability can vary by country, app version and app-store policy, so it should not be assumed to be available everywhere TikTok is available.
Is Lemon8 a direct replacement for Notes?
It is the replacement ByteDance promoted, but not a proven one-to-one migration. Both services are photo-first and support captions, creator discovery and TikTok-account connections. Lemon8, however, is a separate service with its own profile, rules, content-management systems and audience.

What happened to Notes posts, followers and data?
TikTok’s shutdown notice advised users to download and save their Notes data. Its support page says the Download your data tool may include a username, photo history, comment history and privacy settings.

That does not guarantee a clean archive of every original-resolution image, comment, engagement statistic or relationship. Nor do the cited sources establish that Notes followers, posts, comments, usernames or analytics were automatically recreated on Lemon8. Account linking and cross-sharing are not the same as a complete migration.
- Consider the May 8, 2025 retirement date final; search results may still show old Notes pages.
- Keep original photos and captions in your own storage, not only in a platform export.
- Use TikTok’s data-download process where available, but check what the resulting files actually contain.
- Set up or review Lemon8 separately, including its privacy and account-linking settings.
- Rebuild important followers and collections manually unless the app explicitly confirms a transfer.
- Before deleting anything, check both services. Removing a corresponding post from TikTok does not necessarily remove it from Lemon8, and vice versa.
Did the shutdown affect TikTok itself?
No evidence in the cited material indicates that ByteDance ended TikTok’s native photo-posting features. The decision concerned a separate Notes app. TikTok users can therefore encounter photo posts and Lemon8 integration without Notes still existing as a standalone destination.
Was the closure caused by the U.S. TikTok ban controversy?
The timing overlapped with intense U.S. scrutiny of ByteDance apps, and Lemon8 was discussed in some coverage as an alternative destination during uncertainty about TikTok’s availability. But TikTok did not cite U.S. regulation as the reason for closing Notes. ByteDance had begun integrating TikTok and Lemon8 before the shutdown was announced.

The careful conclusion is that regulatory events were surrounding context, not an established legal cause. U.S. availability and policy can change independently of the historical Notes decision.
The bottom line
TikTok Notes is no longer operating: it shut down on May 8, 2025. ByteDance retired the smaller, overlapping experiment and directed users toward Lemon8, a more established photo-and-lifestyle service. That was a recommendation and strategic consolidation—not proof that every Notes post, follower or analytics record moved automatically. Former users should treat Lemon8 as a new platform, preserve their own media and verify account and privacy settings separately.
