TikTok retired Notes on May 8, 2025, and directed users toward ByteDance-owned Lemon8. It was a limited experiment, not a documented worldwide launch or a lasting Instagram challenger.
What TikTok Notes was
Notes was a separate app designed for people who wanted to “share and engage through photo content,” rather than make TikTok’s traditional short-form videos. Its intended uses included travel diaries, personal updates, lifestyle photography, photo collections and longer written captions.
Users could sign in with an existing TikTok account. The app had its own photo feed, comments, profiles, following tools, privacy controls and analytics, while remaining connected to parts of TikTok’s account and content system. TikTok’s official description is still available at TikTok Notes support, although that page may have been retained after the service was retired.
Timeline: from project to shutdown
- April 8, 2024: Reporting identified “TikTok Notes” as the likely name of TikTok’s photo-sharing project. TechCrunch reported on the name and early rollout.
- April 17, 2024: TikTok began limited testing in Australia and Canada, describing Notes as a dedicated space for photo and text content. TechCrunch covered the initial test.
- During 2024: Vietnam was also identified in later reporting as part of the test footprint.
- May 8, 2025: TikTok retired Notes and encouraged users to move their photo activity to Lemon8. TechCrunch reported the shutdown notice.
The evidence supports a selected-market test, not a confirmed global release. There is no reliable public user-growth or engagement dataset in the available reporting that demonstrates meaningful adoption.

How Notes worked with TikTok
Login and content sharing
An existing TikTok account could be used to access Notes. TikTok photo posts and their top comments could be made visible in Notes, and users could choose whether to follow the same accounts there. During testing, sharing behavior changed: early launch coverage described prompts suggesting that existing and future photo posts might be shared unless users opted out, while TikTok’s later support documentation described a user-controlled setting that was off by default after downloading and logging in.
Linked identity, separate controls
The TikTok username was shared between the two profiles, but several settings could be managed independently. Notes had separate analytics, and users could independently manage their nickname, profile photo, account type, following and other profile or privacy controls. Blocked accounts and some safety settings were shared across the services. For users under 18, a Notes profile was private by default.
What did not carry over
Audio attached to TikTok photo posts did not carry over when those posts appeared in Notes. TikTok’s support documentation also described a data-download process that could include a username, photo history, comment history and privacy settings.

TikTok Notes versus Instagram
Notes resembled Instagram in its basic photo-sharing behavior, but calling it a full Instagram clone would overstate what was documented. Instagram had a mature global network and a much broader product surface, including video, Stories, direct messaging, shopping, advertising and creator features. Notes was a new, limited test centered on still images and text.

Contemporary feature coverage from The Guardian and Android Authority described Notes as an Instagram competitor because the format and intended behavior overlapped, not because it had reached Instagram’s scale.
Why TikTok built a photo app
TikTok already had a large audience, creators and a growing supply of photo posts. A dedicated service could give the company a stronger position in image-led categories such as fashion, food, travel and lifestyle, while reducing its dependence on video. Reusing TikTok credentials and existing photo content lowered the barrier for current users to try it.

Those are strategic inferences from the product design and account integration, not a published statement of TikTok’s internal plan. The documented mechanics show an attempt to use TikTok’s existing creator and content base to enter Instagram’s historical territory.
Was Notes available in the United States?
There is no strong evidence in the cited launch coverage of a U.S. release. The best-documented initial markets were Australia and Canada, with Vietnam mentioned in later reporting about testing. TikTok Notes should therefore be described as a selected-market experiment rather than a clearly documented global product.

What happened to Notes?
TikTok announced that Notes would shut down on May 8, 2025. The company encouraged users to download their data and continue sharing photo content on Lemon8, a separate ByteDance-owned photo and lifestyle service. TikTok did not publicly give a specific reason for the closure.

It is reasonable to view the Lemon8 recommendation as a consolidation of ByteDance’s photo-content strategy, but it is not proof that Notes failed because of low usage. No official adoption figures or official explanation establish that conclusion.

Save data before a service closes
Users who wanted to preserve Notes history were advised to use TikTok’s data-download process. The support documentation says downloadable information could include photo history, comments, username and privacy settings. Because the help page remains online after retirement, treat its current instructions as potentially stale and do not assume that every function still works.
Do not assume automatic migration
TikTok directed users toward Lemon8, but the available sources do not establish automatic transfer of every post, follower, comment or performance metric. Lemon8 is not simply another name for Notes, and a recommendation to use it is not evidence of a seamless migration.

Lessons for creators and marketers
- Notes offered a possible extra outlet for existing photo content, but its separate analytics meant performance could not simply be treated as TikTok performance.
- Cross-posting could reduce production effort, yet it also risked duplicate work, fragmented audiences and dependence on an experimental service.
- For brands in visual categories, the limited rollout and short lifespan make Notes a historical case study, not a durable channel recommendation.
- A TikTok following did not guarantee an equivalent audience on a separate photo app.
What to use instead
There is no current TikTok Notes app to join. TikTok’s suggested destination was Lemon8, which is relevant to creators interested in visual lifestyle publishing but is not an identical replacement for Instagram or Notes. Creators focused on TikTok production can use TikTok Studio for creating, editing, uploading, managing and analyzing TikTok content. Businesses seeking paid reach and commerce tools should look to TikTok for Business; CapCut is a production tool rather than a social network.
Final assessment
TikTok identified a genuine competitive opening in photo sharing and built Notes to test it with TikTok’s account and creator infrastructure. But the product remained a limited experiment, never became a documented global Instagram rival, and was retired roughly a year after testing began. Its lasting significance is the strategy it revealed: TikTok was willing to extend beyond short-form video, then redirect that photo ambition toward Lemon8 when Notes did not continue.
