Spotify Premium Duo is a two-person household plan: each member gets a separate Premium account, but both must live at the same address. It works much like a small family plan, though Spotify sells it as a distinct subscription—not a couples-only product. In the United States, the listed recurring price is $18.99 per month, which is $6.99 less than two Individual plans.
How much does Spotify Premium Duo cost?

Two Individual subscriptions cost $25.98 per month. At the listed recurring prices, Duo saves $6.99 a month, or $83.88 a year—about 26.9% compared with paying for two Individual plans. That works out to $9.50 per person each month. The calculation excludes taxes and any differences caused by third-party billing. Spotify may display introductory offers for eligible new subscribers; those are not the recurring Duo price.
Duo is $6 more than one Individual subscription, buying a second Premium account. Family is only $3 more than Duo: at the listed prices, three Family members pay about $7.33 each per month, while six pay about $3.67 each.

Is Duo a family plan, and who qualifies?
In practical terms, Duo uses family-plan-like mechanics: one person manages the subscription, multiple individual accounts are linked, and the members must share a household address. Officially, however, it is Spotify Premium Duo, a separate plan for two people who live together. Spotify’s rule is co-residence, not marriage or romantic partnership, so roommates, siblings, or other household members can qualify too.
Both members must provide the same address as the plan manager. Spotify says the address must be in the same country as the payment method. This is an eligibility condition, not a suggestion for long-distance couples or friends who live elsewhere.
Address verification is not a requirement to be physically at home every time you listen. Spotify says that once the shared address has been verified, both members can use their accounts anywhere and on any device. Verification may still be requested later.

Spotify’s Duo plan rules and its address-verification guidance explain the requirements.
What each person gets—and what stays with the manager
Each member uses their own Spotify account, not a shared login. Playlists, saved music, listening history, recommendations, credentials, and devices remain separate. Both can listen independently without having to exchange passwords or use one listening profile. Spotify says people upgrading with an existing account can keep saved music, playlists, and recommendations.
The U.S. Premium page lists features such as ad-free listening, offline listening, full playback control, and lossless audio. Feature availability can depend on current plan terms and market rollout.
The plan manager pays the bill, invites or removes the other member, administers the subscription, and controls the plan address. Spotify says the manager cannot be changed after the plan is created. The U.S. plan also includes 15 hours per month of audiobook listening time for the manager only—not automatically for both members. Spotify says the manager can purchase audiobook listening time separately for members.

How to set up Premium Duo
The plan manager
- Open Spotify’s available subscription options and select Premium Duo.
- Enter the household address, choose a payment method, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- From the account page, invite the second person.
The invited member
- Open the invitation link and select Accept invite.
- Check which Spotify account is signed in. If it is the wrong one, select Change account before continuing.
- Enter the same address as the plan manager and select Confirm.
Spotify’s Duo setup instructions are the reference for the signup flow. If the address does not appear in autocomplete, Spotify says to enter the full address and use the available search alternatives; do not substitute someone else’s address.
Address verification: what happens if it fails?
Spotify may ask a member to verify when they join, when the manager changes the plan address, or when Spotify cannot confirm the information provided. Spotify describes checking the supplied address; it does not describe this as continuously tracking a member’s location.
If Spotify cannot verify the address, it emails the member and asks them to enter the full address again within seven days. If the member fails verification or misses that deadline, they lose access to Duo and their account switches to Spotify Free. They may rejoin the same Duo or Family plan, but Spotify says they cannot join another Duo or Family plan for 12 months from the failed-verification date.

Take the verification email seriously and respond by its deadline. A different household address, an address in a different country from the payment method, or a missed response can disrupt Premium access. Consult Spotify’s address-verification instructions if an address is not found or verification is requested.
What if you already pay for Spotify Premium?
You can generally join or upgrade using an existing Spotify account, retaining its saved music, playlists, and recommendations. The transition may be less immediate if Premium is billed through a mobile carrier, internet provider, app store, or another partner: Spotify’s support information says a partner-billed subscription may need to be cancelled and allowed to end before switching.
The timing depends on the billing arrangement. Check the account’s current billing details and the signup screen for the applicable market rather than assuming an immediate transfer. Spotify’s partner-specific guidance is available at its Duo support page.

Moving, separating, cancelling, or changing plans
If one member moves out
A member who no longer shares the plan manager’s address may no longer qualify. Spotify can request verification, and the failure process described above can remove the member from Premium. Duo is therefore a poor fit for people who expect to live in separate households soon.
If the manager cancels or the other person wants control
The manager controls the subscription and cannot be replaced on an existing Duo plan. A new subscription arrangement may be needed if the other member wants to manage payment. Spotify’s Family terms say linked subaccounts return to Free when the primary account holder cancels; those are Family terms, so check the applicable Duo account and cancellation screen for the precise outcome before cancelling.
If you want to switch plans
Spotify says plan members can switch plans only once every 12 months. That restriction matters if your household is changing, you are leaving someone else’s plan, or you might need to join a different household plan soon. Do not treat Duo as a flexible arrangement for people who do not share a stable address.
Is Duo better than sharing one Spotify login?
Yes, for two eligible household members who want independent listening. Duo keeps each person’s recommendations, history, playlists, and account credentials separate. With one shared login, listening activity can mix together, password changes affect both people, and playback can interfere when both try to use the same account. Duo still has one administrative owner, but it avoids making both people depend on a shared password.
Quick Recap
Decide before subscribing
- There are two users, and both live at the same address.
- Both are willing to provide that address for verification.
- One person is comfortable paying and managing the plan without later transferring manager status.
- Neither expects to change plans again within the next 12 months.
- Any partner-billed Premium subscription has been checked for cancellation and end-date requirements.
