TikTok’s LIVE Subscription beta was scheduled to begin on May 26, 2022, but it was not a public launch for every creator. TikTok initially enabled the recurring-support feature for a limited group of invited creators, with broader global availability planned over the following months—not guaranteed on a particular date. Viewers could subscribe only to participating creators.
What TikTok launched
Announced on May 23, 2022, LIVE Subscription gave eligible creators a way to offer recurring monthly support and give their most engaged viewers extra ways to participate. TikTok described it as a tool for strengthening creator communities as well as a monetization option. The May 26 date marked the start of beta testing, not a universal switch-on date. TikTok’s announcement and contemporary reporting both described a limited initial rollout.
This was specifically a subscription for TikTok LIVE creators. It was distinct from one-time LIVE Gifts and Coins, and from later TikTok offerings such as subscriber-only videos, the broader Subscription product, Series, Creator Rewards, or product subscriptions in TikTok Shop.

- Subscriber badges: A badge appeared beside a subscriber’s name, with badges able to upgrade over time.
- Custom emotes: Creators could design emotes for subscribers to use during LIVE sessions.
- Subscriber-only chat: A creator could limit chat participation to paying subscribers.
These benefits did not necessarily mean the entire livestream was paywalled. Contemporary reporting described viewers being able to watch while only subscribers could comment. TikTok’s terms also allowed for creator-specific subscriber interactions and content, so the exact experience could differ from one creator to another. A subscriber-only chat is not the same thing as a subscriber-only stream.
Who could participate in the 2022 beta?
TikTok’s original announcement said creators had to be at least 18, have at least 1,000 followers, and follow TikTok’s Community Guidelines and other platform rules. But those conditions were not a guarantee of access: during the initial beta, TikTok also had to invite or enable the creator’s account. A creator with 1,000 followers could therefore still lack the feature.

Viewers also had to be registered TikTok users aged 18 or older to subscribe, subject to applicable platform and payment requirements. Availability could vary by country, account status, app version, and supported payment method. TikTok’s Subscription Services Terms dated May 26, 2022 set out the age and subscription conditions.
Why access was limited
TikTok said it would begin with a limited, invite-only group and planned to expand access globally over the following months. It did not announce a fixed date when every eligible creator—or every country—would receive the feature. There was no public application path that guaranteed activation on May 26.

For creators, a missing Subscription option could simply mean the account had not been selected or enabled, the rollout had not reached their market, or TikTok’s account and policy requirements were not met. Third-party streaming or production software could not unlock access. For viewers, the practical test was whether a particular creator actually offered subscriptions.
Price, renewals, and creator earnings
TikTok did not announce a universal launch price or a definitive creator revenue-share percentage. The 2022 terms said fees could vary by the creator’s country and described two subscription forms: a one-time subscription lasting 30 days, or a monthly subscription that renewed automatically until canceled. Payment could use supported methods, including Apple and Android app-store systems.

Because pricing was market-dependent and no launch-wide price table or payout split was published, a single dollar amount or percentage should not be treated as established for the beta. The announcement also did not settle whether app-store fees were deducted before a creator’s share, whether creators could set their own prices, or precisely how quickly access would expand. Viewers considering a subscription should check the price shown in their own account, the creator’s stated perks, whether renewal is automatic, and the cancellation terms presented by TikTok or the relevant app store.

TikTok later added other forms of subscriber content, including subscriber-only videos; those were not among the three core benefits announced for the May 2022 beta. In 2024, TikTok described an expanded Subscription product for eligible creators beyond LIVE, with additional possible perks such as custom experiences, shoutouts, LIVE topics, and Discord roles. TikTok’s later general eligibility description included a route based on at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the previous calendar month, or specific LIVE eligibility requirements. Those later criteria should not be substituted for the 2022 announcement’s 1,000-follower threshold plus invitation. That later expansion is part of the feature’s history, not evidence that the original May 26 beta was open to all creators or that every later perk applied at launch. Current availability and eligibility can change; the 2022 announcement should not be read as a description of every TikTok account’s options today.
What the limited rollout meant in practice
For creators, the beta offered a possible recurring income stream and tools to recognize loyal viewers, but access was selective and the economics were not fully disclosed. Subscriber-only chat could make a community feel more focused, while also excluding casual viewers from participating. For subscribers, the value depended on the individual creator’s perks and whether they wanted to pay for ongoing access or interaction.
The key point is simple: May 26, 2022 was the beginning of a controlled test, not a deadline by which every TikTok LIVE creator could turn on subscriptions.
