No. There is no credible evidence that TikTok’s AI Manga effect detects ghosts, spirits, energy, or any other paranormal activity. It was an anime-style image effect that transformed camera footage. When users aimed it at empty rooms, the software could generate manga-like people from shadows, furniture, reflections, noise, or other ambiguous details. The result shows what the effect produced—not that a spirit was present.
What the AI Manga effect was
AI Manga was a TikTok visual effect associated with anime and manga-style transformations. It became a novelty “ghost-hunting” tool when users pointed the camera at bedrooms, hallways, workplaces, hospitals, and other spaces instead of at a visible face. Contemporary coverage on December 19, 2022, described apparent figures appearing in those scenes and being interpreted as ghosts.
“Ghost filter” and “ghost detector” were audience descriptions of this use. They were not evidence that TikTok named or designed the effect as a paranormal instrument.

Why people saw ghosts
- A user aimed the camera at an apparently empty room.
- The effect transformed the image and produced an anime-like person or humanoid shape.
- The creator interpreted that figure as a spirit.
- Captions, suspenseful music, reactions, personal stories, selective retakes, and tight editing made the output look like evidence rather than an artistic transformation.
An “empty” room is visually full of edges, textures, curtains, wall decorations, furniture, reflections, lighting gradients, compression noise, and shadows. A generative effect can interpret those patterns as body-like forms or fill an unclear area with a plausible manga character. People also naturally perceive faces and bodies in ambiguous shapes, a tendency known as pareidolia.
The key distinction is simple: a generated picture of a person does not prove that a person—or a spirit—was in the source scene.
What the software most plausibly did
TikTok’s current Effect House documentation describes generative image models, prompts, reference images, image-to-image transformations, style controls, depth and edge sensitivity, facial similarity, and cutout tools. The original AI Manga effect’s internal implementation is not documented well enough to assign it one exact mechanism. Plausible contributors include:
- Pattern recognition: shadows, furniture, reflections, plants, or wall objects may be read as human-like structures.
- Generative completion: ambiguous areas may be filled with a character because the model is optimized for an anime-style result.
- Low-light and camera artifacts: sensor noise, motion blur, compression, and poor contrast create unstable shapes.
- Subject bias: a character-oriented effect has reason to favor person-like outputs over leaving every unclear region blank.
- Frame instability: tiny movements or different frames can lead to different generated details.
These are explanations for image generation, not proof of the historical effect’s exact code.
Why repeatability matters
A paranormal detector would need to respond consistently to the same conditions. Contemporary reporting by Distractify described repeat runs in which figures disappeared and background details changed. That was a reported observation, not a controlled laboratory study, but variability is important: changing characters, furniture, or silhouettes are normal signs of an unstable visual transformation and weak evidence for an external entity.

No available TikTok documentation describes AI Manga as having a paranormal sensor, a spirit-training dataset, or a validated detection method. A single generated frame therefore ranks at the weakest end of evidence, alongside a dramatic edited video with no original file.
Can you still find AI Manga?
The original effect’s current status is uncertain. TikTok says effects can vary by country, device, operating-system capability, app version, and whether an effect remains active. Its Effect House FAQ also notes that some community effects are unavailable in certain countries or on lower-end devices.

- Open TikTok and tap Add post (+).
- Tap Effects.
- Search for AI Manga, if an effect search field is available.
- Tap Use effect.
You can also open a recent video that visibly uses an effect and tap its effect name, when TikTok displays one. If AI Manga does not appear, it may be renamed, removed, region-limited, incompatible with the device, or no longer listed. Do not assume that a missing result means a hidden detector.
Some secondary meme documentation reported that the effect was removed or became unavailable after users misused it to create nude anime-style images. Know Your Meme records that claim, but TikTok’s current public documentation does not provide a definitive historical removal explanation.
Does an AI label authenticate the “ghost”?
TikTok defines AI-generated content broadly to include images, video, and audio created or modified with AI, including cartoon and anime-style depictions. TikTok may automatically label content made with its AI effects, and creators may need to disclose realistic or substantially AI-edited material. Its guidance is available at TikTok Support.

An AI-generated label means software created or changed the media. It does not mean TikTok verified that the depicted figure existed in the room. TikTok’s integrity and authenticity rules address the risk that edited media can be mistaken for reality.
How to test the claim responsibly
If you are curious, treat the exercise as a test of the effect, not an investigation of ghosts:
- Use a well-lit, ordinary room and avoid unsafe or restricted locations.
- Keep the camera fixed and record a blank wall, furniture, plants, and intentionally irregular objects.
- Run the same scene repeatedly, changing nothing except restarting the effect.
- Test known people and ordinary objects under the same conditions.
- If possible, use a second phone and preserve the original, unedited recordings.
- Ask someone else to review clips without telling them which one supposedly contains a ghost.
- Compare figures, background changes, lighting, and frame selection rather than only the most dramatic still.
Do not film minors, private individuals, homes, workplaces, hotels, or hospitals without permission. Never trespass, climb, drive, or enter abandoned buildings because a video suggests paranormal activity. A normal camera, retained original file, date, lighting notes, and mundane explanations are more useful for documenting an ordinary unexplained event than an AI effect. Environmental instruments such as a temperature logger, light meter, audio recorder, or motion camera can record measurable conditions, but none proves that ghosts exist.

For entertainment, describe the output as an anime or generative visual effect and label fictional staging clearly. TikTok’s current anime, cartoon, and generative effects can recreate the aesthetic without presenting it as detection. Creators who want more control can explore TikTok Effect House; its tools are for building effects, not finding spirits. Video editors such as Filmora can construct deliberate horror imagery, but editing makes fictional content more convincing and should be disclosed.
Verdict
The AI Manga trend can generate convincing ghost-like manga figures in ordinary rooms. That is evidence of a variable image-generation effect responding to ambiguous visual input, not evidence that it detected a paranormal entity. No credible source establishes a sensor, repeatable method, controlled testing, or developer claim that the effect detects ghosts.
