TikTok AI Alive turns a single still photo into a short, AI-generated video for your TikTok Story. Open your profile photo, choose or take a picture, tap AI Alive, enter a prompt (or use TikTok’s default), then tap Continue. The tool can add motion and atmosphere, but it is not a precise timeline editor—and the result may change details or add elements that were not in the original image.
What TikTok AI Alive does
TikTok describes AI Alive as its first AI-driven image-to-video creation feature. It is built into TikTok’s Story workflow: select one photo, describe the movement you want, and generate a video to share as a Story. It is not a separate app or a general-purpose video editor. TikTok’s launch announcement shows a sunset scene with changing sky colors and drifting clouds, alongside the sound of waves. That is an example, not a promise that every photo will receive those effects.
“Bring a photo to life” means generative animation, not a faithful 3D reconstruction. The system synthesizes a sequence of moving frames from a still image and prompt. It may animate environmental details such as clouds, water, light or leaves, and can invent movement, depth, gestures, objects or sound. The result may not preserve every face, hand, item of text or other detail exactly.
- AI Alive: Generates a moving video from one photo for a Story.
- Photo posts: Share still images or photo-mode content rather than generating an animated clip.
- Other effects: TikTok has other camera and editing effects; those are not the same feature.
- Dedicated editors: Separate tools may offer more editing controls, but AI Alive is designed for a quick in-app Story workflow.
How to make an AI Alive Story
TikTok’s current support instructions describe this path in the mobile app. The profile photo entry point may also be available from Inbox or the For You and Following feeds. TikTok’s AI Alive support guide has the feature’s current steps.

- Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap your profile photo to open the Story camera.
- Take a photo, or tap Upload to choose one from your device.
- Tap AI Alive on the side panel.
- Enter a prompt, or leave TikTok’s default prompt in place.
- Tap Continue and wait for the video to generate.
- Review the result, then tap Your Story to publish it.
You can return to AI Alive and regenerate with a new prompt. TikTok’s interface also provides ways to stop generation or turn AI Alive off, including Stop generating and, where shown, Apply AI Alive. Completed and in-progress results can be accessed through drafts or notifications. After posting, TikTok says the Story can be viewed from the For You and Following feeds and the creator’s profile.
How to write a useful prompt
TikTok confirms that prompts can guide the result, but it does not publish a formal prompt syntax or guarantee that particular instructions will work. A practical pattern is: subject + motion + environment + camera feel + restraint. Ask for one or two small movements rather than trying to direct a whole scene.

Environmental motion is usually a safer request than asking several people to dance or perform complex actions: broad movement gives a generative system more opportunity to distort anatomy, clothing or facial details. Treat the examples as starting points, not guaranteed recipes. TikTok has not publicly specified prompt-length limits, supported languages, negative-prompt support, reliable camera-direction controls, explicit audio prompting, or user controls for duration, aspect ratio, frame rate or resolution.

Generation time, drafts and expiry
TikTok says generation may take about one minute; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed processing time. You can use other TikTok features while it runs, and TikTok says it sends a notification when the video is complete. AI Alive drafts expire after seven days, so save an authorized copy or publish a result you want to keep before then. Downloading, editing or reposting may affect the file’s embedded provenance metadata.

What TikTok says happens to the photo and result
TikTok’s public description supports a high-level workflow: the selected image and prompt are processed to generate a video; moderation checks apply to the source image, prompt and generated result; and TikTok performs another safety check when the Story is posted. TikTok has not publicly identified the underlying model, its provider, training data, inference architecture, or whether processing is entirely in-house. No specific technical implementation should be assumed.
TikTok says AI Alive Stories receive an AI-generated label and that C2PA metadata is embedded to help identify the content as AI-generated when downloaded and shared elsewhere. C2PA is provenance information in the file; its survival and visibility can vary if content is edited, re-encoded or reposted. Neither a label nor moderation review guarantees that viewers will understand the content’s origin or that every harmful or misleading output will be caught. TikTok’s announcement describes the feature’s labeling, and its AI-generated content guidance explains broader platform labeling rules.

Privacy, consent and rights to the image
Avoid uploading an image just because it is available on your phone. Consider whether you have permission to use and transform it, especially when it shows another person. Sensitive material is a poor fit for an experimental creative tool.

- Do not casually upload children’s faces, private individuals who have not consented, identity documents, medical or financial information, or images exposing a home address, license plate or workplace.
- Use photos you created or have permission to process, and use people’s likenesses only with appropriate consent.
- Use music and sound you are authorized to publish.
- Review TikTok’s applicable privacy terms for data practices. TikTok’s public AI Alive materials do not state a feature-specific retention schedule or establish that source photos are immediately deleted or used to train a model.
TikTok’s broader AI-content guidance prohibits certain depictions, including AI-generated likenesses of people under 18 and adult private figures used without permission. An AI label does not grant copyright, privacy or publicity rights, and does not make non-consensual impersonation acceptable. If AI Alive is missing or a generation fails
Availability is not documented as universal. TikTok’s support page explains how to use the feature but does not publish a complete country list, minimum operating-system version, supported-device list or rollout schedule. If AI Alive is available on your account, use the Story photo workflow; its absence does not by itself establish the reason.
- Use the TikTok mobile app rather than a desktop browser, and enter through your profile photo or Story camera rather than the ordinary Add post workflow.
- Update TikTok through your device’s official app store, restart the app and try again.
- Try a single, clear photo with an uncomplicated composition.
- If generation appears stuck, stop it and retry; check drafts or notifications for a completed or in-progress result.
- If the result is distorted, narrow the prompt to subtle environmental movement, crop clutter, or use a conventional editor when exact text, logos or anatomy matter.
The feature may vary by account, market, app version, device, age or account settings, or product experiments. TikTok’s reviewed guidance does not establish that changing region settings, using a VPN or reinstalling the app will enable it. A rejection or missing result may reflect moderation, an automated error or temporary availability; the support guide does not provide a complete error-code explanation.
When AI Alive is enough—and when to use an editor

AI Alive is a poor fit when you need precise control over a face, hand, logo or product; a clean unbranded asset; fixed technical specifications; a repeatable professional workflow; or processing of a confidential image. For more editing functionality, CapCut is one separate option, but it is not interchangeable with AI Alive and its terms and availability are distinct. See CapCut’s terms for its jurisdiction and device caveats. There is no need to buy a separate tool just to try AI Alive.
Reporting a misleading AI depiction
If you encounter suspected AI content that violates TikTok’s rules, TikTok gives this reporting path: Share or press and hold the post → Report → Misinformation → Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media → Submit. The route is documented in TikTok’s AI-generated content guidance.
