The clearest confirmed connection between Captain America: Brave New World—the fourth Captain America film—and Thunderbolts* is Bucky Barnes. He appears in both, and Brave New World director Julius Onah said Bucky’s role supports Sam Wilson’s emotional journey and links the film to Thunderbolts*. The later film adds another direct connection when Bucky’s team becomes the New Avengers and Sam disputes the team’s use of the Avengers name. These links connect the films’ continuity, but do not mean they share one continuous central plot.
Is the Thunderbolts* plot leak confirmed?
No particular anonymous, full-plot leak is authenticated by the available evidence. The reliable way to separate fact from rumor is to ask whether a claim describes the released film, comes from an identified creator discussing development, or is simply an unattributed pre-release assertion. Specificity alone does not make a leak true.
Marvel’s official Thunderbolts* page describes Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker caught in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. For the finished story, Bob and his transformation into Sentry and the Void are central: Disney’s spoiler-marked account explains that Bob volunteered for a secret super-soldier experiment, Valentina tried to present him as Sentry, and his darker side emerged as the Void (Disney’s “Who Is Bob?”).

That released story is not proof that every circulating plot claim was accurate. It is also important to separate a genuine account of an abandoned idea from a description of the movie audiences saw.
How Bucky connects Thunderbolts* to Captain America 4
Bucky Barnes is the direct character bridge. In an interview with TheWrap, Brave New World director Julius Onah said, “Bucky was always in the movie.” He explained that the filmmakers chose where Bucky would appear to serve Sam Wilson’s emotional journey.

Onah also described the connection to Thunderbolts*: “And invariably, you end up having a connection to ‘Thunderbolts,’ because Bucky is such a big part of Sam’s journey.” He said the appearance “dovetails in a way that sets up what’s going forward.” These are creator-attributed comments about the films’ relationship, not confirmation of a single shared plot. What the two films’ stories have in common—and what they don’t
The films connect through characters and franchise continuity, but their main premises are distinct. Marvel’s official Captain America: Brave New World page frames that film around Sam Wilson taking up the Captain America mantle and becoming caught in an international incident after meeting President Thaddeus Ross. Thunderbolts*, by contrast, follows Valentina’s group of antiheroes through a dangerous mission.

Bucky’s presence links Sam’s story to the next film, while Thunderbolts* develops its own conflict around Valentina, Bob, Sentry and the Void. A crossover connection should not be mistaken for evidence that one movie is simply the second half of the other.
What the Thunderbolts* ending adds to the connection
The film’s ending and credits scenes make the link more explicit: Bucky’s team is rebranded as the New Avengers, and a later scene shows Sam Wilson disputing the team’s use of the Avengers name. Why a development idea is not a plot leak
Thunderbolts* changed during development. Screenwriter Eric Pearson told TheWrap that an early version considered a Red Hulk direction involving John Walker, but the idea was dropped; Sentry became the relevant character in the released story. Pearson also described other versions evolving as the project changed. This is evidence that a concept was considered, not that it was the final plot or that an anonymous leak about it was accurate. For claims about either film, the useful distinction is between what appears in the released cut, what an identified filmmaker or writer says about the production, and what remains an unverified rumor. The first two can establish facts about the films or their development; neither retroactively authenticates every leak posted before release.
