The film ends with Yelena and the team helping Bob confront the Void and freeing people trapped in their worst memories. Valentina then brands the group the New Avengers. The credits scenes turn that new name into a point of conflict—and tease the Fantastic Four—without spelling out the full next chapter of the MCU.
How does Thunderbolts* end?
Bob’s Sentry experiment goes wrong. He becomes the Void, whose power traps New Yorkers inside their worst memories. Yelena leads the former Thunderbolts in trying to reach Bob rather than simply defeat him. By helping Bob face the darkness, the group helps release the people caught in the crisis.

The resolution gives the team a real achievement: they work together and save people. But it does not absolve Valentina, whose experiment set the events in motion. The ending holds those two facts together—heroic action by the group, and responsibility for the danger created by its director.
Why does Valentina call them the New Avengers?
After the rescue, Valentina presents the group to the public as the New Avengers. It is both a team-origin moment and a reputation-saving rebrand for a leader whose experiment caused the crisis. The film shows Valentina applying that label; it does not establish that the public accepts the group as legitimate Avengers.

- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
What happens in the credits scenes?
The Avengers name becomes a dispute
One credits scene brings Sam Wilson’s objection to the team’s use of the Avengers name into view. The Los Angeles Times describes it as a legal or naming dispute. The practical consequence is clear: Valentina can give her team a label, but other Avengers may challenge its legitimacy. Los Angeles Times
A ship marked with a 4 arrives
In a later scene set after a time jump, the New Avengers react to a spacecraft entering Earth’s atmosphere. The ship bears a 4, a pointed reference to the Fantastic Four. The scene sets up an apparent arrival and teases contact between the teams. Los Angeles Times Phase Hero

- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
What does the Fantastic Four tease establish?
| What the scene shows | What it suggests | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| The New Avengers see a spacecraft marked with a 4. | The ship is connected to the Fantastic Four, and contact with the New Avengers is being set up. | The ship’s full origin, the exact circumstances of the Fantastic Four’s arrival, or the consequences for the wider MCU. |
That distinction matters: the number is a strong Fantastic Four signal, but the tag is a tease, not a complete explanation of the crossover or its continuity mechanics.
How should the tag be read alongside The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Production timing is a reason not to assume the credits scene already supplies the other film’s full explanation. In a later interview report, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman said the Thunderbolts* tag was created after he was working on his script and that he did not know about it at the time. That comment supports caution about treating the two scenes as a single, fully mapped story; it does not rule out a connection. GamesRadar+
What the ending means for the MCU
Thunderbolts* leaves two immediate threads for the MCU: whether the team can claim the Avengers name, and what happens when the spacecraft’s apparent occupants meet them. The first is a conflict over public identity and legitimacy; the second points toward a Fantastic Four connection. The film does not settle either thread, so the ship should be read as a promise of contact rather than proof of a specific crossover plot.
Disney lists the film as Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* / The New Avengers and gives its release date as May 2, 2025. Disney Movies
