Thug Life brings Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan together for a Tamil gangster drama about a found family undone by suspicion. Its premise gives loyalty and revenge real dramatic weight, but critics have been divided over whether the story makes the most of its visual craft and star performances.
What is Thug Life about?
Directed by Mani Ratnam and co-written by Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, Thug Life follows Sakthivel, a gang leader, and his brother Manickam as they rescue a boy named Amaran during a police shootout and take him in. Years later, an attempt on Sakthivel’s life makes him suspect the adopted son he once protected. The film’s central tension is the turn from paternal loyalty to suspicion, then toward revenge; going further would mean spoiling plot developments.

Haasan leads an ensemble that includes Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan and Abhirami. Joju George and Nasser are also credited in the production teaser. Ravi K. Chandran is the cinematographer, Sreekar Prasad the editor, Anbariv handled action, and A.R. Rahman composed the music.
Does the story deliver on its premise?
The setup offers a strong source of conflict: Amaran is both family and a possible threat, so Sakthivel’s suspicions put personal attachment and criminal power on a collision course. The critical response suggests that the execution is less consistent than the premise. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Hollywood Reporter’s Anupama Chopra described it as “A muddled gangster saga,” while Sucharita Tyagi wrote that it “seems allergic to world-building.” Those are individual published reactions, not a substitute for a viewer’s own judgment, but they point to concerns about narrative coherence and how fully the film establishes its world.
#1 Best Overall
There is also a more appreciative view of the film’s craft. Simon Foster of Screen-Space called the visuals “eye-popping” and Haasan a “winning anti-hero,” even as he criticized the narrative as increasingly preposterous. Taken together, these comments frame the main trade-off for prospective viewers: the film has elements critics found striking, but its story and execution drew substantial criticism.
What have critics and audiences said?
In the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed on 8 October 2026, Thug Life had a 25% Tomatometer from 12 critic reviews and a 31% Popcornmeter from 50-plus verified ratings. These are platform aggregates that can change, and the audience figure comes from a modest, platform-specific sample; neither percentage is a comprehensive measure of the film’s quality. The excerpts show a range of emphasis, with criticism of the story alongside praise for visual style and Haasan’s performance.
How long is Thug Life, and what is its rating?
Classification and duration depend on the listing. India’s Central Board of Film Certification record gives the film a UA 16+ certificate and a certified length of 165.42 metres; that measurement is not a running time in minutes. The British Board of Film Classification lists an approximate runtime of 163 minutes and records a UK cinema release on 7 June 2025. The production teaser had announced a worldwide theatrical release for 5 June 2025, a separate release reference rather than a conflicting UK date.
For UK viewers, the BBFC’s content advice is “strong violence, injury detail, suicide.” Its notes also refer to caste discrimination, sexist behavior, drug dealing, adultery and child trafficking. The film is not suitable for every viewer.

Where to watch Thug Life
Netflix’s India listing identifies Thug Life as a 2025 Tamil-language title and lists Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil (original) and Telugu audio, with English and Hindi subtitles. That page also says the title is currently unavailable in the viewer’s country. Availability varies by location and can change, so check your local Netflix catalog rather than assuming the film is available everywhere.

Thug Life is a plausible pick for viewers drawn to Haasan, Ratnam’s filmmaking, or a crime story built around loyalty curdling into revenge. The published response makes the caveat clear: its visual and performance strengths did not prevent many critics from finding the narrative muddled or poorly executed. If a coherent, carefully built gangster saga is your priority, that criticism is worth weighing; if the premise and performers are the main draw, the divided reception may still leave room for a worthwhile watch.
