Deutsche Welle’s documentary Through Kazakhstan by Train, subtitled A Clinic on Rails, follows Salamatty Kazakhstan (“Healthy Kazakhstan”), a government-launched project that brings doctors and medical equipment to remote communities. DW says the train travels about 20,000 kilometers over eight months each year, stopping in villages and small towns where residents may be hundreds of kilometers from a hospital or clinic. Read DW’s documentary description.
What the documentary follows
The film focuses on a mobile clinic serving sparsely populated parts of Kazakhstan. Rather than centering on a fixed hospital, its setting is a train that brings medical staff and equipment to communities far from conventional care. DW describes the service as operating daily while the train is on its annual journey.
The documentary also follows the people who make the journey possible. Alongside doctors, the crew includes kitchen staff, stewards and technicians. Living and working together over a long route, they form close bonds; their encounters with patients bring both physical ailments and the everyday worries people carry into a medical consultation.
Salamatty Kazakhstan’s journey
DW translates the project’s name, Salamatty Kazakhstan, as “Healthy Kazakhstan” and says the government launched it to improve medical care in sparsely populated regions. According to DW’s synopsis, the train is underway for eight months each year and covers around 20,000 kilometers, stopping in villages and small towns. These are figures reported in DW’s September 30, 2026 documentary description, not independently confirmed service statistics.
#1 Best Overall
The scale helps explain the premise: a mobile clinic can bring care closer to people who live far from hospitals or clinics. DW’s description does not specify the exact route, stop-by-stop timetable, clinical services available, patient numbers or outcomes, or how the train coordinates referrals and follow-up care. The film’s synopsis therefore establishes the service’s broad purpose and journey, not a detailed account of its medical scope.
