The deaths of Kaoutar Naqqad, Imane Mallah and Wafae El-Arar at a hotel in San Pedro, Belize, were initially unexplained. Later reporting on Belize’s forensic findings identified fatal carbon-monoxide exposure—not a drug overdose. In February 2026, a U.S. television report said the families were filing a wrongful-death lawsuit and that investigators believed a faulty water heater likely caused the poisoning. That reported theory is not a court finding.
What happened at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort?
On February 22, 2025, the three women—U.S. nationals originally from Morocco—were found dead at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro. Early coverage said authorities had not determined the cause. It also relayed suspicions of a possible overdose based partly on observations at the scene. Those accounts were preliminary speculation, not a forensic conclusion. Contemporary incident reporting
What did the forensic findings report?
On March 26, 2025, Greater Belize Media reported that the Belize National Forensic Science Service had confirmed fatal carbon-monoxide exposure after toxicology analysis. The report said tests found no illegal or pharmaceutical drugs in the women’s bodies. It identified acute pulmonary edema as the terminal cause of death and carbon monoxide as the underlying or contributing exposure. Greater Belize Media’s report on the forensic findings
The forensic finding therefore superseded early overdose speculation. The evidence described in the report came through local news accounts attributing the result to Belize’s forensic service; the article did not provide a direct forensic report.

What answers did the families demand?
In March 2025, the families called for a full investigation and initially described the deaths as suspicious. Their statement raised concerns about reports of carbon-monoxide measurements at the hotel and its closure while toxicology results were pending. They said: “They deserve an honest and full investigation, and we ask all of those in power in both Belize and the United States to join us in demanding answers to the true cause of this tragedy.” The statement was quoted by Greater Belize Media. Greater Belize Media’s account of the families’ initial statement
After the carbon-monoxide finding was reported, the families welcomed the findings but said an independent review in Massachusetts was still underway. They also objected to earlier media reports. These are the families’ stated positions, not independent findings about the hotel or the investigation. Greater Belize Media’s report on the families’ response

What is known about the wrongful-death lawsuit?
On February 3, 2026, WHDH reported that the families were filing a wrongful-death lawsuit and seeking to have the case tried in Massachusetts. The report said investigators believed a faulty instant water heater likely caused the poisoning. That is a reported investigative theory and part of the litigation account—not a judicial determination of cause or liability. The reviewed coverage does not establish the lawsuit’s later status or outcome. WHDH’s February 3, 2026 report
