Owncast does not automatically relay a stream to YouTube. It receives an RTMP feed and serves viewers on its own site using HLS. To use Owncast and YouTube at the same time, send the broadcast to both destinations with software or a relay that supports simultaneous outputs. This guide covers the self-hosted setup on an Indian VPS, the separate capacity demands, and the checks needed before calling it continuous.

How the Owncast and YouTube setup fits together

Think of this as two publishing destinations, not one server forwarding to another:

  • Your encoder sends an RTMP stream to Owncast.
  • Owncast processes that feed into HLS for viewers on your Owncast site.
  • A separate output in your broadcasting software or a suitable relay sends the broadcast to YouTube.

Owncast’s documented role is an RTMP ingest and HLS delivery server; its documentation does not describe automatic forwarding of an incoming stream to YouTube. Configure and verify both destinations independently. Owncast’s overview and broadcasting documentation are available at Owncast documentation and Set Up Broadcasting Software.

Choose an Indian VPS based on verified capacity

An India-based server may reduce network distance for some broadcasters or viewers, but location alone does not make a VPS suitable for continuous video. Provider regions, transfer allowances, sustained throughput and long-running traffic policies change, so verify current terms directly before purchasing. Owncast lists providers with pre-installed options, including Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud and Vultr; that list does not establish that a particular plan currently has an Indian region or enough egress for your audience. See Owncast provider options.

KAMRUI Pinova P2 Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 7330U(4 Cores, 8 Threads, Up to 4.3GHz), 16GB RAM 256GB SSD, Zen3 Architecture 7nm Processor, 8MB L3 Smart Cache Mini Computers,Triple 4K Display Home/Business
  • 【AMD Ryzen 7330U】 – The Efficiency-Tuned Powerhouse,AMD Ryzen 7330U (Zen 3, SMT, 4C/8T) in KAMRUI P2 mini PC crushes rivals: Intel i3-10110U (2C/4T, 2019) and N95 (4 efficiency cores, no HT, single-channel memory). Vs predecessor Ryzen 3 4300U (4C/4T): ~50% faster single-core, ~46% multi-core, 8MB L3 cache (vs 4MB). Beats both Intel chips hugely in multi-core, making heavy multitasking, coding, data work smooth at just 15W TDP. High-end power in a cool, efficient box.
  • 【AMD Radeon Graphics】– Triple 4K Vision & Fluidity,The integrated Radeon Graphics (based on the modern Vega architecture with 6 CUs) is a visual beast, outclassing the iGPU offerings from both AMD's prior generation and Intel. The Intel UHD Graphics (i3-10110U/N95) struggles with single-channel memory and low execution units, crippling its gaming performance and barely handling basic 4K video without stuttering. While the older Radeon Vega 5 (4300U) was decent, our 7330U's Radeon Graphics (6 CUs) pushes the boundaries, delivering higher graphics clock speeds (up to 1.8GHz) and significantly better rendering capabilities. It can drive triple 4K@60Hz displays with zero lag, edit photos/videos.
  • 【Generous Storage & Easy Expansion】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop computers comes with 16GB LPDDR4X RAM (higher frequency, lower power) for buttery‑smooth multitasking, and a 256GB M.2 SSD for blazing fast boot‑up, quick file transfers, and no more long loading screens. It also features two storage expansion slots (1x M.2 2280 SATA/NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot + 1x M.2 2280 SATA slot), supporting up to 4TB total (not included). You’ll have all the space you need for projects, media, and important data.
  • 【Triple 4K Display Output】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop pc is equipped with HDMI 2.0 ×1 + DP 1.4 ×1 + USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C ×1 (with DP Alt Mode), enabling simultaneous triple 4K@60Hz output. Whether for home entertainment, remote work, or conference room presentations, it delivers an immersive visual experience. Two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑A ports (up to 10Gbps – 21x faster than USB 2.0) make data transfers and device expansion a breeze.
  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
  • Confirm the exact data-center location and public IPv4 availability.
  • Check that firewall rules permit the services you intend to expose.
  • Read sustained outbound throughput, monthly transfer accounting and overage terms.
  • Check virtual CPU capacity if you plan to transcode multiple output qualities.
  • Confirm the provider permits long-running live video traffic.
  • Consider where your viewers are located; India is not automatically the best delivery location for an international audience.

Install Owncast and secure the first run

Owncast offers a quick installer, manual release installation, containers and pre-installed hosting options. The quick installer can download FFmpeg if it is missing; the manual method requires FFmpeg. Owncast advises inspecting remote installer scripts and not running its remote installer as root. Follow the current official installation guide for the method you choose.

  1. Prepare the host. Use a supported Linux environment, arrange storage and firewall access, and decide whether a reverse proxy will sit in front of Owncast.
  2. Install Owncast. Use the official instructions for the chosen installation method rather than improvising a service configuration.
  3. Expose only the required services. The default web interface uses port 8080 and RTMP ingest uses TCP port 1935. A reverse proxy or other network design may change which ports need public exposure. Configure both host and provider firewalls deliberately.
  4. Open the admin interface. Visit http://your-server:8080/admin unless your deployment uses a different hostname, port or proxy path.
  5. Replace default credentials immediately. Owncast documents the default admin username as admin, and the default admin password and stream key as abc123. The admin password and stream key are separate credentials even though their defaults match. Change both, keep the stream key private, and do not reuse either default.
  6. Configure startup and recovery. Use Owncast’s system-service instructions so the service starts after a host reboot, then verify its status and behavior after an actual restart. The relevant quickstart includes service setup guidance.

Connect OBS or another RTMP broadcaster

Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. Its RTMP path is /live; the key is configured separately. Use your real hostname and the port for your deployment, not the example hostname below.

  1. In Owncast, set or copy the stream key you intend to use.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom service, and enter a server URL such as rtmp://yourserver:1935/live.
  3. Paste the matching key into OBS’s stream-key field and apply the settings.
  4. Start the stream and check the Owncast status and playback page.

If your broadcaster only provides one destination field, the key may be appended to the RTMP path. Owncast says software capable of sending RTMP is generally compatible, but it has not tested every application. Its OBS instructions are at Set Up Broadcasting Software.

Use settings that both endpoints can accept

Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility, with a two-second keyframe interval. Its example starting points include 1080p30 at 4500 kbps and 720p30 at 3000 kbps; these are not guarantees for your VPS, source connection or audience. Start with one quality your server can support and confirm stable playback before expanding.

YouTube has its own ingest requirements, separate from Owncast’s recommendations. Its live guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency (not over four seconds), and specifies constant-bitrate encoding. YouTube bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; consult its current table at YouTube Live encoder settings before setting the YouTube output. A setting that works for Owncast is not automatically the right setting for YouTube.

Plan bandwidth, CPU and output quality

Broadcaster upload to the VPS

The source connection must sustain the encoder bitrate to Owncast. Owncast’s rule of thumb is upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate to leave room for fluctuation and overhead. For its 5000 kbps example, that means at least 7.5 Mbps of source upload capacity. Treat that as a planning floor, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. Owncast explains this at System Requirements.

VPS outbound bandwidth to Owncast viewers

Viewer delivery is a separate load from the source’s upload. Owncast’s approximate peak-egress formula is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5000 kbps and 25 simultaneous Owncast viewers, one quality needs roughly 125 Mbps of sustained outbound throughput before practical headroom and protocol overhead. Traffic also accumulates with stream duration, so check the provider’s transfer accounting as well as peak speed.

CPU and multiple qualities

CPU load depends on whether Owncast passes the incoming stream through or transcodes it, and on how many output qualities you configure. Owncast’s rough measured guidance is that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, with substantial variation by codec, bitrate, resolution, preset and host. This is a planning estimate to benchmark, not a VPS sizing guarantee. More viewers primarily raise delivery bandwidth; transcoding work is done once per output quality.

  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Begin with one output variant. Check stream health and playback, then add variants only when the server has headroom. Additional qualities can help viewers with slower connections but cost more processing. S3-compatible object storage is another option for moving video delivery away from the VPS, with its own provider and configuration requirements. See Owncast documentation and System Requirements.

Make the stream continuous, not just live once

A successful first launch does not prove an unattended setup will recover. Before relying on it, test each failure path and confirm the source encoder or relay can resume publishing after disconnects.

  • Verify Owncast starts after a VPS reboot and returns to a healthy service state.
  • Disconnect the source briefly, reconnect it, and confirm Owncast resumes receiving and serving the feed.
  • Check Owncast playback from a viewer connection, not only from the server itself.
  • Test the YouTube destination separately, including what happens when its connection drops.
  • Monitor the VPS for service status, CPU pressure, outbound usage and storage needs.
  • Keep recovery access and current credentials available without exposing the stream key.

For a source that must run without a person at a computer, decide explicitly what plays after a disconnect and how the encoder or relay restarts. Do not describe the arrangement as continuous until reboot, source recovery, Owncast playback and YouTube publishing have each been checked.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect to Owncast Incorrect hostname, port, RTMP path, firewall rule or stream key Confirm the server URL uses the actual host and /live path, the key matches Owncast, and TCP port 1935 is permitted by both firewalls.
Owncast is not reachable in a browser Port 8080 is blocked, the host is down, or a proxy is misconfigured Check Owncast service status, host and provider firewall rules, and any reverse-proxy routing. The default web port is 8080.
Video stutters or drops Source upload fluctuates, VPS egress is constrained, or the server lacks headroom Separate source upload from viewer egress; compare each against bitrate and concurrent viewers. Reduce complexity or output variants while diagnosing.
CPU spikes after adding qualities Each transcoded output adds processing work Return to one variant, check stream health, then add outputs incrementally only if measured headroom remains.
Owncast works but YouTube is offline Only the Owncast destination was configured, or YouTube’s output settings/key are wrong Configure YouTube as a distinct destination in software or a relay that supports simultaneous outputs. Verify YouTube’s current encoder requirements and its own stream status.
Service stays down after reboot Owncast was launched manually but not configured as a system service Follow Owncast’s service setup instructions and test a host reboot rather than assuming the process will return.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded video live without maintaining an encoder on your own computer, StreamNeo is a separate route: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube; it is not an Owncast host or a camera-streaming service.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Use content you own or are authorized to stream. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules, and permission for a recording, music track or documentary excerpt may not include permission to retransmit it continuously. YouTube’s reused-content monetization policy is also distinct from copyright permission: a channel may have rights to material yet still need to meet YouTube’s monetization policies. Review the current rules for your material and channel before scheduling a loop; Owncast operating correctly does not establish that a YouTube stream complies.

For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist. For estimating transfer time before upload, see the upload-time calculator; for comparing ongoing computer and cloud costs, use the cloud vs PC cost calculator.
