Threads has an online indicator, but it is not a new 2026 feature: contemporary reporting dates its rollout to October 16, 2024. The separate claim that Meta launched a feature formally called “Profile Cards” is not confirmed in Meta’s public Threads announcements as of August 18, 2026.
What Threads’ online indicator shows
The indicator is a green dot shown beside a profile picture to signal activity, according to Thurrott’s October 16, 2024 report, which quoted Threads’ explanation. It is a general presence signal—not proof that someone is reading a particular post, following a conversation, or ready to reply. The report does not establish exactly how long the indicator remains visible after someone stops using the app.
For private profiles, the reported explanation says activity status is visible only to followers. That distinction means the signal is not described as public to everyone, but the available information does not establish availability for every account, region, platform, or app version. Some users may see it while others do not, including because features can roll out gradually.

The path reported at launch was:
- Open Threads and go to your profile.
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Select Privacy, then Online status.
- Turn online status off.
This is the menu path reported in October 2024 by Thurrott. Labels and navigation can change across iOS, Android, web, app versions, and account rollouts; if the path differs, check the current settings in your app. The reporting confirms that the control exists, but does not establish whether disabling it changes what status information you can see, affects messaging or notifications, syncs with Instagram, or hides activity across every Threads surface.

What “profile cards” may mean—and what is confirmed
Meta’s public Threads newsroom archive does not show an announcement for a feature formally named “Profile Cards.” That does not prove no interface experiment or limited rollout exists; it means a public Meta announcement confirming the named feature is not established in the available record as of August 18, 2026.
Two 2026 third-party articles use the “profile cards” framing: Position Is Everything and TechBloat. They describe possible compact previews with a photo, name, handle, bio, follower information, follow button, or connection cues. Those details are not confirmed specifications from Meta in the cited public announcements.

A small profile panel that appears when someone taps a username or profile image could simply be a profile preview, a pop-up with a follow button, or part of a profile-page or feed interface. Seeing such a panel does not by itself establish that Meta launched a distinct product feature called Profile Cards. A dated screenshot or an official announcement would be needed to support claims about a specific rollout and its contents.
Convenience versus pressure
A presence signal can help when people are coordinating a live conversation, covering an event, hosting a creator Q&A, or monitoring a community or customer-support account. It can also make a text-first network feel more immediate. Those are plausible uses and product incentives, not a confirmed statement of Meta’s rationale or measured results.

The trade-off is that “online” can be read as “available,” even when a person has only opened the app briefly or left it open. Friends, colleagues, customers, or strangers may expect a prompt response; creators and public-facing accounts can be especially easy to misread as constantly reachable. Users who prefer asynchronous posting, browse without signaling availability, or have mixed personal and professional audiences may find the indicator unnecessary and choose to switch it off.

Meta’s announcements point to a broader expansion of Threads beyond a simple posting feed. Its newsroom archive records messaging and highlighted perspectives in July 2025, live chats in April 2026, and community and feed-control updates in June 2026. Meta also said Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users by June 2026 in its announcement of new features.

That documented emphasis on discovery, creators, communities, messaging, and real-time activity helps explain why presence cues could fit the product. It does not verify that Profile Cards launched, nor does an online indicator establish the existence of a separate full messaging inbox.
