An entire movie can be turned into one image by sampling its frames and arranging those samples in a visual sequence. The result is usually called a movie barcode when each frame becomes a narrow band of colour, or a frame mosaic when recognizable images are tiled into a grid or enormous canvas. These pictures make patterns across a film easier to see, but they are visual summaries—not substitutes for its motion, sound or story.
What a movie barcode shows
A movie barcode reduces selected frames to colour values and lays them out in temporal order, typically from left to right and then top to bottom. In a common version, each frame becomes a narrow strip based on its average colour. The finished image turns a film’s changing palette and broad light-dark structure into a compact visual fingerprint. Jack Hughes’s 2020 Nuke tutorial describes this approach and illustrates it with a barcode for Aliens – Special Edition.
The colour sequence can make shifts between bright and dark passages or changes in overall palette visible at a glance. It does not tell you exactly what is happening in a scene: reducing a frame to colour discards its composition, subjects and most other spatial detail. Nor does the still image retain dialogue, music, sound effects or the experience of motion.
Four ways to compress a film into an image
| Method | What each element represents | Useful for seeing | What it leaves out or makes difficult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movie barcode | A narrow colour sample from each selected frame | Changes in colour over time and broad luminance patterns | Most spatial detail, plot and soundtrack |
| Sampled-frame grid | Recognizable frames taken at set intervals and arranged in rows | A coarse visual timeline and recurring scenes or colours | Brief events between samples and the motion connecting frames |
| All-frame mosaic | A large sequence assembled from many or all frames | A dense visual record of the frame sequence | Easy viewing at ordinary size; a very large image may require zooming or camera movement |
| Long-exposure composite | Visual information accumulated across a film into one exposure-like image | Where colours and imagery accumulate spatially | A clear frame-by-frame timeline |
These are related visualization ideas, not interchangeable formats. A barcode prioritizes temporal colour change. A grid preserves more recognizable frame information, while an all-frame mosaic can pack far more frames into the canvas. A long-exposure composite instead layers visual information, emphasizing accumulated spatial colour rather than a readable sequence. The 2018 AIC proceedings discuss movie barcodes as single-pixel columns based on frame colours and describe long-exposure images as a complementary approach.

Examples: from a minute-by-minute grid to a giant mosaic
Cinema Redux: one sampled frame per second
Artist Brendan Dawes’s project description for Cinema Redux says each row represents one minute of a movie and contains 60 frames, sampled at one-second intervals. Created in 2004, the work was acquired by MoMA for its permanent collection in 2008, according to Dawes. Its recognizable frames give the viewer more scene-level information than a strip of average colours, but its one-second sampling can miss brief events and does not show motion between samples.
Blade Runner revisited: an enormous all-frame image
A 2010 Gizmodo report says François Vautier extracted 167,819 frames from the Final Cut of Blade Runner and assembled them into a square approximately 60,000 pixels on each side—about 3.5 gigapixels. In the resulting video, a virtual camera travels across the image. Those figures describe this particular artwork and version, not a standard size or requirement for movie mosaics.

Aliens – Special Edition: a sampled barcode
In Hughes’s 2020 tutorial, the completed Aliens – Special Edition barcode uses 4,000 sampled output frames. That is a project-specific choice, not a general benchmark for how many samples a film needs.
How a documented Nuke barcode workflow works
Hughes’s January 2020 tutorial shows one way to make a movie barcode in Foundry Nuke. Its steps explain what the image-building process involves; they are a documented example rather than a claim that this is the only or best workflow.

- Select the range: use a Retime node to define the input and output ranges for the frames to sample.
- Measure frame intensity: use a CurveTool to sample average frame intensities across the selected sequence.
- Turn samples into colour: paste the CurveTool values into a Constant node to display the sampled colours.
- Arrange the samples: configure a ContactSheet to lay out 1-by-1-pixel frames, then stretch the result into the final strip.
There is a practical dependency in this example: because the CurveTool values are pasted into the Constant, changing the upstream sequence means rerunning the sampling step to update the barcode.

Start with the question the image should answer. For a quick view of colour flow through time, use a barcode. To retain a coarse visual timeline of scenes, use a sampled-frame grid. If the goal is to assemble a dense record of the frame sequence, an all-frame mosaic offers greater sampling density at the cost of a much larger canvas. For accumulated colour and spatial distribution rather than temporal order, use a long-exposure composite.

- Sampling density: how many frames are represented, and how far apart are the samples?
- Meaning of each mark: is it an average colour, a recognizable frame or accumulated imagery?
- Temporal order: can you follow the film’s sequence, or has information been layered together?
- Spatial detail: can the viewer recognize objects and compositions, or only broad colour patterns?
- Purpose: is the image intended to support visual analysis or to function as an artwork?
Whichever format you choose, the image is a selective representation. It can reveal patterns that are hard to notice during ordinary playback, but it cannot communicate a film’s full audiovisual experience or guarantee understanding of its plot.
