A playful global map lets you zoom into a place and see a top-ranked birthplace—but its results reflect Wikipedia and Wikidata visibility, not a final verdict on local greatness.

Topi Tjukanov’s Notable People map can turn a familiar patch of geography into a documentary-sized rabbit hole. Zoom into a city, suburb, town or neighbourhood, choose a category, and a name appears: the highest-ranked birthplace record at that mapped location in the project’s source data.

That is a wonderfully specific premise—and an important distinction. The map does not establish who represents a town, who grew up there, or who its residents consider most important. It shows the single highest-ranked person born at each unique location, using a visibility-and-documentation score derived from Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Built with Mapbox by Topi Tjukanov, the project credits inspiration from The Pudding’s U.S. People Map and acknowledges Wikipedia and Wikidata as essential sources.

How to use the map without overreading it

  1. Start at the global view and pan or zoom toward the place you want to explore.
  2. Use the category control to switch between All, Culture, Discovery & Science, Leadership, and Sports & Games.
  3. Turn on ordinary place labels if you need more geographic orientation.
  4. Click a person’s label to open the detail panel. It includes a Wikidata link, the person’s rank, gender, and an alive-status field.

Zooming is the reliable way to explore. The documented interface is built around map navigation and category controls, so it is safer to zoom to an area and inspect the labels than to assume there is a hometown-name search box.

What the name on your map actually means

At any one mapped birthplace, the map deliberately keeps only one person: the record with the best notability rank for that unique geographic location. A label is therefore a selection, not a roll call.

If a celebrated actor, athlete, scientist and local political figure were all born in the same town, only the highest-ranked record is intended to appear there. Conversely, a person strongly associated with a place may not show up at all if they were born elsewhere. Birthplace and hometown identity are not interchangeable.

The most accurate way to describe a result is:

The map ranks this person as the most visible and documented birthplace record at this location in its source dataset.

  • Perfect for wrapping, as posters, framing and other creative endeavors
  • Featuring images from the Cavallini archives

  • Size: 20" x 28"

That phrasing may sound less dramatic than “the most important person from your hometown,” but it captures what the visualization can genuinely tell us.

How the project defines “notable”

The ranking comes from the 2022 Scientific Data research descriptor A cross-verified database of notable people, 3500BC–2018AD, by Laouenan, Bhargava, Eyméoud, Gergaud, Plique and Wasmer. The researchers assembled and cross-verified biographical information from Wikidata and seven Wikipedia editions: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Swedish.

The restricted cross-verified dataset contains 2,291,817 people (often rounded to 2.29 million). Its composite index combines five kinds of evidence:

  • the number of Wikipedia language editions with a biography for the person;
  • the combined word count of available Wikipedia biographies;
  • average annual page views across Wikipedia editions from 2015 to 2018;
  • how complete selected biographical fields are in Wikipedia and Wikidata, including birth date, gender and domain of influence; and
  • the total number of external links in Wikidata.

In plain English, the score tracks how extensively a person has been recorded, linked and read about in those systems. It is not a philosophical, cultural or civic ranking of human achievement.

2 Pack - World Map Poster & USA Map Chart [Tan/Color] (LAMINATED, 18” x 29”)
  • Set of 2 Posters
  • Map posters are 18” x 29” in size
  • High-quality 3 MIL lamination for added durability
  • Tear Resistant

That makes the map especially interesting as a documentary tool. It visualizes the machinery behind public memory: language coverage, page traffic, archival detail and the density of links all help determine which biography rises to the surface.

Why the result may surprise you

A familiar town can produce a result that feels oddly specific, obscure or disconnected from local lore. Usually, that is not a bug in the map. It can reflect the gap between a community’s living memory and a database’s measure of international documentation.

If you see this What it may mean
A person you do not associate with the place The person may have been born there but moved away very early, or become associated with another region.
No locally beloved figure They may not be the highest-ranked person born at that exact location—or may not have a sufficiently complete record in the source data.
An unexpected historical figure Historical documentation, multilingual biographies and Wikidata links can outweigh present-day local familiarity.
Only one name where you expected many The map intentionally selects a single top-ranked record per unique location.

Its limits are part of the story

The research team explicitly cautions against using the index for pairwise judgments between individual people. It is better suited to statistical comparisons across groups or quantiles than to declaring one individual definitively greater, more important or more famous than another.

There are several further reasons to treat the visualization as an invitation to investigate rather than a final verdict:

Cavallini Co. World Map 1 Decorative Paper Sheet 20" x 28"
  • Printed on Cavallini's signature Italian archival paper
  • Perfect for wrapping, as posters, framing and other creative endeavors
  • Featuring images from the Cavallini archives
  • Shipped rolled in Kraft shipping tube
  • Size: 20" x 28"
  • It is not a live fame meter. The dataset’s stated coverage ends in 2018, and its page-view component uses 2015–2018 averages. A result should not be read as a ranking current through 2026.
  • Geographic data need caution. The scholarly work notes that birthplace and death-place names and coordinates had not been fully validated. A pin or label can inherit ambiguity, imprecision or an error from the source material.
  • Documentation is uneven. Cross-verification reduces some mistakes, but the data are only as reliable as their underlying records. The researchers report more meaningful error rates among less-documented people.
  • The score is structurally biased. The project reaches beyond English Wikipedia, but the word-count component uses seven European-language editions. The authors acknowledge the resulting Western-world bias.
  • Time favors the recent. Comparing people across centuries tends to favor those born more recently, whose biographies and digital traces are richer.

None of that makes the map less enjoyable. It makes it more revealing. A viewer can ask two questions at once: “Who was recorded as born here?” and “Why did this person’s documentation rise above others in the data?”

A better way to explore your area

Use the map as a starting point for a small piece of local-history research.

  1. Read the pop-up, then open the Wikidata record. Confirm the birthplace and look for alternate names, dates and identifiers.
  2. Separate birth from belonging. Check where the person was raised, worked, studied or became known before describing a connection to the place.
  3. Look beyond the one displayed name. Search local archives, libraries, historical societies and specialist sources for other people born there. The map is intentionally incomplete at the location level.
  4. Compare categories. A place’s Culture result may tell a very different story from its Discovery & Science or Sports & Games result.
  5. Keep the data’s date in view. It is a snapshot shaped by a source spanning ancient history through 2018, not a current popularity contest.

For viewers who want the methodology

The scholarly team makes its restricted, cross-verified dataset available in CSV and Stata formats under CC-BY-SA. That is useful for researchers who want to examine the methodology or work with the data responsibly. The authors distinguish it from intermediate and exhaustive releases, which are not cross-verified and should not be used directly without taking responsibility for validation.

The map’s currently inspected implementation uses Mapbox GL JS v2.9.1, a Mapbox style and a notable-people-v3 vector tileset. Labels are ordered from a rank property, with styling that changes by rank and zoom level. Those are useful clues to how the experience works, not evidence that the underlying scholarly ranking has been newly refreshed.

The real appeal of the map

Maps have a way of making abstraction personal. Here, a worldwide database of biographies contracts to one street, town or coastline you recognize. The best use of Notable People is not to settle an argument about who matters most. It is to find an unexpected name, trace the thin factual connection back to a birthplace, and notice how much of collective memory depends on who has been documented, translated, linked and read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the map show the most important person from a hometown?

No. It selects the highest-ranked birthplace record for each unique location in its source dataset. A person may be identified with a town without having been born there, and many other people born there are deliberately hidden by the one-person-per-location design.

Is the ranking current?

The underlying research dataset states a span from 3500 BC through 2018. Its Wikipedia page-view signal is based on averages from 2015–2018, so the map should not be treated as a live ranking of present-day fame.

What determines a person’s notability rank?

The index combines multilingual Wikipedia biography coverage and length, 2015–2018 Wikipedia views, completeness of selected biographical information, and Wikidata external links. It measures visibility and documentation, not an objective measure of achievement.

How can I check a surprising result?

The detail pop-up links to Wikidata, where you can check the recorded birthplace and other biographical details. For local significance, consult local archives or historical sources as well; the map is not a complete local-biography directory.

The Bottom Line

Topi Tjukanov’s map is a smart portal into local biography—as long as its labels are read as top-ranked, visibility-based birthplace records, not definitive judgments about a community’s greatest person.
