By June 2018, as Claire’s online audience grew, Crosby had left Amazon and co-founded the smart-home startup Wyze. His story was not simply a choice between a corporate job and internet fame: he said the demands of filming and travel made his Amazon role difficult to sustain, while earning a living from a young child’s work troubled him.
How Claire Crosby’s singing video became a family channel
Crosby had been a musician before his business career. After returning to business school and earning an MBA, he moved to Seattle in 2015 for a job on Amazon’s musical instruments team, according to GeekWire’s June 9, 2018 profile.
At home, he noticed Claire’s singing and recorded her performing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. He said he shared the video with friends and family; its rapid spread led the family to start a YouTube channel in January 2016. In the 2018 profile, GeekWire reported that the original video had 16 million views.
The family’s approach was not to make a daily vlog. Crosby described filming a few times each week, with Claire’s interests guiding much of the song selection. He said his aim was to make content that connected emotionally: “I focus on making good content. I want content that touches people emotionally.”

Why Dave Crosby left Amazon
As the videos attracted attention, filming and travel took more time. Crosby said the growing demands made it hard to keep doing his Amazon job: “It was getting to the point where I felt like I couldn’t do my job at Amazon,” he told GeekWire. “I couldn’t work in a corporate environment with everything that was happening.”
There was also a personal concern about money. Crosby said he felt uncomfortable building the family’s livelihood around the work of his three-year-old daughter: “It felt so wrong because it was so based on my 3-year-old,” he said. “It was like, ‘What kind of dude wants to make a living off his 3-year-old and just bank on her to feed the family?’” The profile captures that tension without suggesting there was a simple answer: the videos had become a major commitment, but their success depended in large part on a very young child.

What Claire’s audience looked like in 2018
GeekWire’s figures describe the channel’s reach when the story was published, not its current audience. The profile reported more than one million YouTube subscribers, two million Facebook followers, and 200 million views across the channel’s videos. It also reported 20 million views for a video of Dave and Claire singing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” These are figures reported by the news profile, not independently audited counts.
How Amazon experience fed into the Wyze startup
Crosby’s next business step was co-founding Wyze, a Kirkland-area smart-home startup. GeekWire connected his idea to what he had observed at Amazon: lesser-known brands competing with established names through lower prices. Crosby described Wyze’s focus as combining affordable products with good reviews and attention to customer experience. That was his account of the company’s thinking in 2018, not a claim about Wyze’s present-day strategy.

By the time GeekWire published its profile in June 2018, Crosby had left Amazon, competed on The Voice, and co-founded Wyze. The account links those milestones through a period when his family’s videos demanded more of his time and his Amazon experience informed his startup thinking. It also records his unease about turning Claire’s early success into the basis of family income. The result is a story about overlapping careers and family life, rather than a straightforward leap from a viral video to a business.
