Soumya Swaminathan is an Indian pediatrician and clinical scientist whose work in tuberculosis and HIV research led to senior roles in India’s health-research system and the World Health Organization. She served as WHO’s inaugural Chief Scientist from 2019 to 2022. Since February 2023, the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation has identified her as its chair, with work focused on climate-related health impacts and nutrition security.

Medical training and early research

Swaminathan earned an MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and an MD in pediatrics from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Ashoka University’s profile also records a Diplomate of National Board credential and postdoctoral fellowship training in neonatology and pediatric pulmonology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Her scientific career grew from pediatric medicine into clinical research, particularly on tuberculosis and HIV. Leading India’s health-research system

From 2015 to 2017, Swaminathan was Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Secretary to the Government of India for Health Research. In these roles, WHO says she worked to bring scientific evidence into policymaking, strengthen research capacity in Indian medical schools and foster South–South partnerships in health sciences. NIH Fogarty also records her leadership of ICMR and the Department of Health Research. WHO TDR profile; NIH Fogarty profile.
